Black Theatre Troupe takes an intimate and moving look at the struggle to break the trappings of poverty in BROKE-OLOGY, the acclaimed play from Nathan Louis Jackson on February 10 - 26, 2017 at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center, 1333 E. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ 85034.

Tickets for BROKE-OLOGY are $36 and are on sale at http://www.blacktheatretroupe.org or by calling 602-258-8129.

Written by Nathan Louis Jackson, who fine-tuned his play while a student at the famed Julliard School in NYC. Jackson based BROKE-OLOGY on his experiences growing up in an impoverished neighborhood in Kansas City. The play was workshopped at Julliard, then went on to phenomenal success, opening at Lincoln Center shortly after Jackson's graduation from Julliard.

Black Theatre Troupe's production of BROKE-OLOGY will be directed by Anthony Runfola and features Christopher Dozier as Malcolm, Rapheal Hamilton as Ennis, Melvina Jones as Sonia, and Mike Traylor as William.

BROKE-OLOGY premiered at the Williamstown Theater in July 2008 and Lincoln Center in 2009. This will be the first presentation of BROKE-OLOGY at Black Theatre Troupe.

BROKE-OLOGY The King family has weathered life's hardships, surviving with their love for each other intact. William King lives in the house his two sons grew up in. He's alone, but he maintains his allegiance with their mother in his own private way. As illness takes its toll on his body, the brothers are called home to take care of him and immediately find themselves at a crossroads. The older son having escaped the poverty and their neighborhood has just finished grad school but returns to town to help take care of his father. The younger brother has remained at home but now must face the reality of his dead-end restaurant job. Broke-ology is a moving exploration of how time and circumstance - and the hard fact of poverty - can diminish hope, divide loving siblings and threaten to extinguish life itself.
