The 2004 film "Mean Girls" was written by Tina Fey. Now a Broadway musical version of the film has earned a whopping 12 Tony nominations. Fey tells TODAY that she was at the gym when she got the news, and "I started crying in the middle of Equinox." More on this story here.

Continuing TODAY's 'Best of Broadway' week, Tina Fey is live on the TODAY plaza to introduce a performance by the cast of her Broadway musical 'Mean Girls,' which has received a dozen Tony nominations. Watch them perform a song from the show, 'Apex Predator.'

Mean Girls opens on Broadway this Sunday, April 8 at the August Wilson Theatre (245 West 52nd Street). The musical features a book by nine-time Emmy Award winner Tina Fey, based on her screenplay for the film, music by three-time Emmy Award winner Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin. Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

A re-imagined version of the 1921 musical SHUFFLE ALONG, one of the earliest stage hits starring, written and directed by African-Americans, opened on April 28 on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre. The musical nabbed a total of 10 Tony nominations this year, including nods for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor and Actress, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Direction, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. 'Well, hang on to your snap-brim fedora: Ms. Zimmerman's fetching revival is as good as any production I've ever seen of the greatest of all the golden-age musicals,' proclaimed the Wall Street Journal when Oregon Shakespeare Festival staged the Broadway musical classic Guys & Dolls earlier this year at its Ashland, Oregon-based theatre.
