Frank Langella Stars in KING LEAR at BAM, Starting Tonight

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts presents the world premiere of THE TEMPEST, produced by the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at The Smith Center in Las Vegas April 5-13, 2014. The Smith Center's first ever co-production, THE TEMPEST is adapted and directed by Aaron Posner and Teller from the play by William Shakespeare, with magic by Teller, music by Tom Waits and movement by Matt Kent of Pilobolus. THE TEMPEST will perform at The Smith Center's Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park in a 500-seat climate controlled tent before moving to Cambridge, MA to begin performances at A.R.T. Silver Spring Stage presents The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield, directed by William T. Fleming and produced by Karen Fleming, hysterical and fast-paced, gag-a-second delight that deconstructs all 37 of the Bard's plays-plus the sonnets-into a single two-hour whirlwind. The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) will perform weekends January 10 to February 1, 2014.

Today in 1948, opened at the Shubert Theatre. Kiss Me, Kate is a musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. It is structured as a play within a play, where the interior play is a musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The original production starred Alfred Drake, Patricia Morison, Lisa Kirk and Harold Lang. Kiss Me, Kate was a response to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and other integrated musicals, and it proved to be his biggest hit and the only one of his shows to run for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. It won the first Tony Award presented for Best Musical, in 1949.

The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival (NCShakes) announces a record schedule of engagements by schools across the state for its Shakespeare To Go program of performances, classroom visits and workshops. The professional theatre company has been touring North Carolina schools since 1978, reaching annually more than 20,000 students. This program features reduced versions of Shakespeare's most studied plays presented by a cast of young professional actors and accompanied by Study Guides and optional classroom visitations and workshops.

I founded Tennessee Shakespeare Company in my hometown of Memphis in 2008 following many years of working as a stage actor, director, artist-manager, primarily in New England. I was personally and professionally compelled to found TSC, and I spent half a year researching and creating a strategic seven-year plan. This gave birth to the Mid-South's only professional, classical theatre. But we quickly outpaced our seven years. We also encountered all manner of unforeseen obstacles, surprises, and even set-backs, which, the further I get from them, the more intriguing they become (as opposed to just harrowing).
