ShawChicago concludes its 2016/17 season, Dysfunctional Family Fun, with George Bernard Shaw's World War I dramedy Heartbreak House. In a Chekovian Fantasia style, Shaw presents a caricature of the 1910s British upper class obsession with propriety. "[Essentially] the upper class who should be the ruling class fiddles while the country falls apart," says Artistic Director Robert Scogin. The Harris Theater for Music and Dance is pleased to present the Chicago premiere of Last Work performed by one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in the world, Batsheva Dance Company on January 27 & 28 at 7:30 PM. Rapier-like one moment, slow and methodical the next, the otherworldly performers of Batsheva Dance Company exemplify the pioneering genius of Artistic Director and Choreographer Ohad Naharin. Batsheva dancers work in the innovative movement language Gaga, created by Naharin, which is informed by a heightened knowledge and self-awareness of the body. In Last Work, Naharin offers an open-ended meditation on the humanism inherent in the body's motion, veering explosively between the political and the excruciatingly personal. (more...)

Drury Lane Theatre announces complete casting for disco musical Saturday Night Fever, rewritten for the Drury Lane stage, featuring music and lyrics by The Bee Gees, based on the smash-hit Paramount/RSO Film and the story by Nik Cohn, and adapted for the stage by Robert Stigwood in collaboration with Bill Oaks. This North American version was written by Sean Cercone and David Abbinantiand is helmed by Tony-nominated director and choreographer Dan Knechtges. Saturday Night Fever runs January 19 - March 19, 2017 at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The Press Opening is Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. A portion of the opening night tickets sales will be donated to ArtReach, a nonprofit providing access to the arts to underserved communities in the Chicago area. Akvavit Theatre, Chicago's premier Nordic Theatre Company, will launch 2017 with new artistic leadership and an expanded ensemble. Five year Akvavit veterans Kirstin Franklin and Breahan Pautsch will serve as the company's new Co-Artistic Directors, succeeding Artistic Director Chad Eric Bergman and Managing Artistic Director Bergen Anderson, who have served since 2009. Bergman and Anderson will remain with Akvavit as Founders and as part of the original company, which still includes Mark Litwicki and Matthew Isler. Additionally, Akvavit welcomes eight new Associate company members: Richard Gilbert, Joe Giovannetti, Sarah Giovannetti, Nigel Harsch, Paulette Hicks, Micah Kronlokken, Julie Mitre and Amber Robinson.  (more...)

The Ruth Page Civic Ballet is proud to present its annual production of The Nutcracker, choreographed by Ruth Page andco-directed by Victor Alexander and Dolores Lipinski Long. This production is performed at Northeastern Illinois University, 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago, Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 and 5 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $25 for general admission, $20 for seniors and children under the age of 12 years and $10 for NEIU students, faculty and staff, one ticket per I.D. card. Also available is "Tea with Clara," a delightful tea party which patrons can enjoy with their favorite The Nutcracker characters from 3:15 - 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. Tickets for "Tea with Clara" include admission to the tea party and either 1 or 5 p.m. performance, and are $85 for adults and $50 for children under the age of 12 years. Chicago Dance Crash (CDC) and Artistic Director Jessica Deahr are proud to regain their sense of humor with the world premiere of And Now for the Dancing Pants!, fit for all ages, playing at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn Ave., Dec. 2-10. Opening Night is Friday, December 2nd at 8pm. Dancing Pants! is conceived by Deahr with choreography by Belle Jensen, Adam McGaw, Richard Ashworth, Stephanie Paul, and CDC Senior Company Member Kaitlin Webster. The show also features an original recording of Silverstein's works narrated by local rapper Al Tamper and a live introduction by local emcee Mr. Mattrick Swayze. Mr. Vilaro was nominated by Jenny Delfini and selected by the awards committee.  The award will be presented at the banquet by President of the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers, Inc., Candace Blach, on October 21, 2016.
