A new Broadway season has arrived at last, full of exciting new shows and revivals of beloved classics. While many of them are original concepts or based on plays, 10 are already films that you can watch from home. Rise and shine, BroadwayWorld! It is August 22, 2023 and it's time to catch up on all of the theatrical happenings you may have missed in the last 24 hours: 

WhatsOnStage today announced that Jodie Prenger and Tom Read Wilson will host the 22nd Annual WhatsOnStage Awards. They are joined by presenters Chris Bush, Graziano Di Prima, Omari Douglas, James Graham, David Harewood, Frances Mayli McCann, Stephanie McKeon, Drew McOnie, Daniel Monks, Tracy Ann Oberman, Johannes Radebe, and more.

Uncle Vanya was filmed on stage under strict covid protocols at the Harold Pinter Theatre in the middle of 2020. The new film version of the production had a cinematic release ahead of being broadcast on BBC Four, making it the first UK stage production closed by the Coronavirus pandemic to have been filmed and produced for the screen.

PBS launches an expanded slate of multiplatform arts programming beginning April 23. Today, PBS and The WNET Group announced #PBSForTheArts, a multiplatform campaign that celebrates the resiliency of the arts in America during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and reopening.

The U.S. premiere of Conor McPherson’s adaptation of Uncle Vanya will premiere as part of PBS Great Performances on Friday, May 7.

I think we can all agree that we have probably watched more series in the past year than we have in our lifetimes. Well, I have at least. Since the one-year anniversary of being home is approaching I thought I would look back on all the shows I have discovered and rediscovered during these troublesome times.

We've looked across successive weeks at a range of plays over time that offered crucial opportunities to an array of then little-known men and women who have since shot to varying degrees of renown. Now, it's time to cast a glance at those stage musicals in London that brought to the attention of keen-eyed playgoers various names whom the world would get to know later.

Last week, we looked at the early stage work of a quintet of actors who have gone on to celebrated work, and a wider public, onscreen. But the same trajectory is every bit as true of Britain's dazzling array of actresses, five of whom are here remembered from their early stage work before one celluloid assignment or another cemented their fame.

The Royal Society of Literature (RSL), the charity that represents the voice of literature in the UK, has today in celebration of its 200th birthday announced RSL 200, a five-year festival launched with a series of major new initiatives and 60 new appointments championing the great diversity of writing and writers in the UK.

Uncle Vanya was one of many West End shows that saw their run abruptly cut short when COVID-19 hit. But, with their set still up at the Harold Pinter Theatre, back in August the show was performed once again, this time to cameras instead of an audience, allowing Uncle Vanya to have a nationwide cinema release.

Uncle Vanya is coming soon to select cinemas in the UK.

Sonia Friedman Productions today announced that Ian Rickson's production of Conor McPherson's new adaptation of Uncle Vanya has been filmed on stage at the Harold Pinter Theatre in partnership with Angelica Films.
