Park Avenue Armory announced today its 2014 season, an unprecedented mix of presentations and commissions ranging from Kenneth Branagh's highly-anticipated New York stage debut in an immersive and visceral staging of Macbeth; to the London-based trio The xx in a performance that alters the interaction and relationship of the audience with the band; to a visual art commission by artist Douglas Gordon and classical pianist He?le?ne Grimaud that will transform the drill hall into a water-filled environment; to Peter Sellars's staging of St. Matthew Passion which fuses the audience, the orchestra, and soloists into one dramatic, unified assembly. Nigel Redden, director of the Lincoln Center Festival, and Rebecca Robertson, President and Executive Producer, Park Avenue Armory, today announced that the two organizations will co-present The Passenger, Mieczyslaw Weinberg's uncompromising 1968 opera about the Holocaust, performed by Houston Grand Opera and directed by David Pountney, in its New York premiere performances July 10, 12 and 13 at Lincoln Center Festival 2014. Pountney's production will have its U.S. premiere on January 18, 2014 at Houston Grand Opera. (more...)

Drawing inspiration from the 19th-century German fairytale Snow White and McCarthy's ongoing exploration of American myths and icons, WS takes over the Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall from today, June 19 through August 4, 2013, and marks the Armory's seventh major visual art installation to date. This June, Park Avenue Armory unveils a new large-scale installation and video project by artist Paul McCarthy, considered among the most provocative and influential voices in the international art world today. Drawing inspiration from the 19th-century German fairytale Snow White and McCarthy's ongoing exploration of American myths and icons, WS takes over the Armory's Wade Thompson Drill Hall from June 19 through August 4, 2013, and marks the Armory's seventh major visual art installation to date. The monumental installation weaves together a fantastical forest and a three-quarter-scale house modeled after McCarthy's own childhood home with multi-channel video projections to immerse visitors in a world of fantasy and depravity. A press preview for WS will be held at the Armory on June 18, 2013. (more...)

The Gish Prize Trust today announced that playwright, actress, author and educator Anna Deavere Smith has been selected to receive the 19th annual Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, given annually as a legacy from the legendary film and stage actresses. Established in 1994, it is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the arts and is also one of the largest, currently bearing a cash value of approximately $300,000. Throughout the years, the Prize's mission has helped to support artists who have pushed the boundaries of their art forms and contributed to social change, therefore paving the way for future generations of artistic innovators. In less than three weeks, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller will fill Park Avenue Armory's vast drill hall with their most ambitious sound installation to date. An otherworldly soundscape created using nearly 100 speakers, THE MURDER OF CROWS will immerse visitors in a vivid narrative realized through the artists' evocative and poetic use of sound-from crashing waves to a marching band to the hubbub of a factory floor. Woven together, these sounds create a haunting melodrama, exploring concepts of love, loss, and vulnerability. (more...)
