Mayor Bloomberg Proclaims May 10 'Women in Jazz Day'

To celebrate the acclaimed documentary The Girls in the Band coming to Lincoln Center, Mayor Bloomberg has proclaimed Friday, May 10 “Women in Jazz Day.” The date celebrates the legacies of female jazz musicians and marks the first in a weeklong series of screenings of The Girls in the Band at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center at Lincoln Center. Written, directed and produced by Judy Chaikin and produced and executive produced by Michael Greene, the film tells the stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists from the 1920s to the present day and chronicles their inspired journeys and struggles for recognition. Off-Broadway's hit comedy HOW TO BE A NEW YORKER will celebrate its 100th performance next Friday May 10th. Written and performed by Margaret Copeland and Kevin James Doyle, HOW TO BE A NEW YORKER opened on October 17, 2012 at Sofia's Downstairs Theater in the heart of Times Square.

Louis Armstrong House Hosts International Jazz Day Party Today

A fanfare by New York City trumpet stars, a premiere of newly discovered recordings from 1961 by Louis Armstrong, discussion of that music by dean of jazz critics Dan Morgenstern (who was there) and Armstrong House Museum Archivist Ricky Riccardi, a proclamation from NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a soul-food reception will comprise the free-to-the-public International Jazz Day party, today, April 30, co-hosted by the Louis Armstrong House Museum and the Jazz Journalists Association.

Mayor Bloomberg to Inaugurate Orly Genger Installation in Madison Sq Park

Madison Square Park Conservancy's Mad. Sq. Art announces a new installation for Spring and Summer 2013 by New York-based artist Orly Genger. The monumental commission entitled Red, Yellow and Blue will feature the artist's renowned usage of intricately hand-knotted nautical rope covered in paint, creating a work that will transform the park's lush lawns into colorfully-lined chambers. The work will remain on view daily from May 2 through September 8, 2013 in Madison Square Park. Following its New York run, the installation will travel to the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum outside of Boston in October 2013, marking the first Mad. Sq. Art commission to tour.

NYC Welcomes 20,000 Trees in Largest Tree Planting Effort of Spring 2013

Today NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White joined NYS Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland, Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Edna Wells Handy, Human Resources Administration Commissioner Robert Doar, NYC Service's Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford, and more than 500 volunteers at Alley Pond Park in Queens to plant 7,405 trees and 1,950 shrubs at the MillionTreesNYC Spring Planting Day. Other parks hosting planting events today were: Idlewild Park in Queens; Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx; and Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Clove Lakes Park will host a planting event on Sunday. Over the course of the weekend, 20,000 trees will be planted citywide.

The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking applicants for the new NYC Parks Fellowship and Conservation Corps Program. Announced by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in his 2013 State of the City address, the Conservation Corps will help to improve the resiliency of New York City's parks and beaches by engaging a group of 30 participants in public service and introducing them to park management, horticulture, environmental education and recreation, conservation, and sustainability. Beginning September 2013, the Conservation Corps program will support priority projects, provide valuable work experience, and foster the next generation of leaders dedicated to protecting and enhancing the City's parks and natural resources.
