Because many adult smokers began smoking during adolescence, preventing teenagers from trying cigarettes is critical. Virtually all American students receive anti-smoking education, and there has been no weakening of restrictions on tobacco advertising. The cost of cigarettesusually a strong predictor of declines in teen smokingcontinues to rise. NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh today joined Executive Director of the Open Space Alliance/North Brooklyn Parks Administrator Ed Janoff, Assembly Member Joseph Lentol, Senator Daniel Squadron, Council Member Steve Levin and NY1's Pat Kiernan to open the McCarren Ice Rink, the only public ice rink in North Brooklyn, for its inaugural season. The rink, which officially opened to the public at 11:00 a.m. will be a major holiday destination in North Brooklyn, offering skating classes, clinics and demonstrations, in addition to providing a pro shop, skate rentals and skate sharpening. On November 20, Council Member Rosie Mendez, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate D. Levin, and NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney along with leaders from the four arts and service organizations that comprise 122 Community Center (AIDS Service Center NYC, Mabou Mines, Painting Space 122, and Performance Space 122) will break ground at 122 Community Center, a former public school located at 150 First Avenue. The event signals the beginning of Phase II of a $35 million city-funded construction and renovation project that will upgrade and enhance the19th century historic building and increase the space from 35,000 sq. ft. to 43,000 sq. ft.
