BWW Review: Billie Holiday's Legend Comes to Life in Soulful LADY DAY AT Emerson's Bar and GrillBWW Review: Billie Holiday's Legend Comes to Life in Soulful LADY DAY AT Emerson's Bar and Grill
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Sep 16, 2016

"No two people on earth are alike, and it's got to be that way in music or it ain't music." spoke jazz singer Billie Holiday. No singer duplicated Billie Holiday's inimitable voice or immortalized jazz singing and standards quite like this legendary diva.. While Holiday herself idolized Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, "Lady Day" as she was nicknamed, captured the audience's imagination while breaking their hearts when speaking of her tragic childhood. Unfortunately, the singer's personal demons in love and life were also legendary In a tribute to Holiday's career, Milwaukee Rep's opening Stackner Cabaret Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill features the award-winning Alexis J. Roston portraying the star in her declining years after release from a year's imprisonment on drug related charges, which plagued the star her entire life. (more...)

BWW Review: Cultural Fusion's LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL is Smooth as SilkBWW Review: Cultural Fusion's LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL is Smooth as Silk
by Libby Champion - Sep 12, 2016

Perfectly encapsulating the great singer Billie Holiday is no easy feat. The legendary jazz singer with a career spanning over thirty years was a mystery to many people - she was beautiful and talented but her personal life was shrouded in drug and alcohol addiction and a myriad of abusive relationships. On paper, it's easy to leave it at that and move on - another celebrity sob story. But in Cultural Fusion's production of LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL, words normally associated with Holiday such as 'revered', 'pain' and 'soulful' take on a whole new meaning, and Holiday's story is so much more than that.   (more...)

BWW Review: Mosaic Theater's SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF A Reflection of Our TimesBWW Review: Mosaic Theater's SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF A Reflection of Our Times
by Andrew White - Sep 6, 2016

When you have a chance to see a seasoned actor like Craig Wallace, gifted with quiet charisma, performing a one-man show and embodying three inimitably American characters, all I can say is - stop reading this drivel, just go see the man. Director Eleanor Holdrige has collaborated with Wallace to create a timely meditation on fame, race, music, and the tragedy of a generous soul trying to survive in a cynical, brutal world.  Mosaic Theater has launched its second season with a quietly powerful show that should leave audiences with a renewed appreciation for an American legend whose depth of character is rarely acknowledged.
