Previews begin tomorrow, today, March 20 for the Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) world premiere of IOWA, a new musical play written by Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist Jenny Schwartz (God's Ear, Somewhere Fun), music by Todd Almond (Stage Kiss at PH, Kansas City Choir Boy, The Tempest, On the Levee) and lyrics by Mr. Almond and Ms. Schwartz. Directed by two-time Obie Award winner Ken Rus Schmoll (Red Dog Howls, Middletown, What Once We Felt; next season's Antlia Pneumatica at PH), the musical play will be the fifth production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season. Signature Theatre has announced that Quiara Alegria Hudes & Lisa Kron have joined the Residency Five program, which provides five-year residencies for multiple playwrights, guaranteeing three full productions of new work over the course of each playwright's residency. Fish In the Dark, the new comedy starring and written by Larry David, the creator and star of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm and co-creator of Seinfeld, begins previews at Broadway's Cort Theater on February 2nd and open on March 5 for a limited 18-week engagement through Sunday, June 7. Earlier this month, BroadwayWorld reported that the show had already earned over $11 million in advance ticket sales, and the number has only grown since. BroadwayWorld has just confirmed that advance ticket sales have surpassed $13.5 million, breaking a play pre-sale record, previously held by Betrayal, of $13.05 million. (more...)
