Red Bull Theater today announced a new three-part collaboration with the Shakespeare Society exploring Shakespeare and the Jacobeans on Film. The series includes a Shakespeare Society major member event (open to the public) and two film screenings. All three events will be held at the SVA Theatre (333 West 23rd Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues) part of the School of Visual Arts. Tamburlaine the Great starring John Douglas Thompson, edited and directed by Olivier Award-winner Michael Boyd into one fast-moving three-hour event with choreography by Sam Pinkleton and music composed by Arthur Solari, extends its broadly-acclaimed run for an additional two weeks through January 4 at Theatre for a New Audience, Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place, Theatre for a New Audience Founding Artistic Director Jeffrey Horowitz announced. Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, welcomes new officers and nine new members to its board of directors. Sarah Bellamy, co-artistic director of Penumbra Theatre Company, and Kevin Moriarty, artistic director of Dallas Theater Center, succeed Robert Hupp and Lydia R. Diamond as joint vice presidents. Jonathan Moscone, artistic director of California Shakespeare Theater, succeeds Ralph Bryan as secretary. Diane Rodriguez, associate artistic director of Center Theatre Group, and Tim Jennings, managing director of Children's Theatre Company, remain as president and treasurer, respectively. (more...)

John Douglas Thompson will lead a company of 19 actors playing 60 roles in the first major New York production since Broadway 1956 of Christopher Marlowe's 1587 epic Tamburlaine, Parts I and II, Jeffrey Horowitz, Founding Artistic Director of Theatre for a New Audience, announced. Directed and edited by Olivier Award-winner Michael Boyd, former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Marlowe's two-part drama will be performed as one 3.5-hour play, plus a 30-minute intermission. The producers have announced that the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway hit production of the new play, Satchmo at the Waldorf, written by Terry Teachout, will give its final performance Sunday afternoon, June 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at The Westside Theatre (407 West 43rd Street). Starring John Douglas Thompson, recipient of the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Solo Performance, and directed by Gordon Edelstein, Satchmo at the Waldorf began performances on February 15, 2014, opening to rave reviews on March 4, 2014.
