Demetria Joyce Bailey, who channeled the persona of Ethel Waters in 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' when it played at Bristol Riverside Theatre, has her Media Theatre debut in a legendary role of a different type. She will portray the sassy, demanding, and conniving Matron 'Mama' Morton in Media's production of the classic hit musical 'Chicago' September 28-November 6. 'Mama' Morton watches over the female prisoners of Cook County Jail in the satirical look at the criminal justice system.

Barrymore Awards Honor Terrence McNally et al.; 2011 Nominations Announced!

The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia today announced 121 nominations in 23 categories for the 2011 Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre. The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 66 voters who each saw 8 of the 147 shows nominated this year. Four additional awards-Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service Award, the Ted and Stevie Wolf Award for New Approaches to Collaborations, Brown Martin Philadelphia Award and the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist-will also be distributed at the ceremony.

Jason Robert Brown's intimate musical 'The Last Five Years' will close at The Media Theatre February 27. The one act show tells the story of an aspiring actress who meets and falls in love with a novelist. At The Media Theatre, Jennie Eisenhower portrays Cathy, the aspiring actress. Wallingford's Marcus Stevens takes on the role of the novelist, Jamie.
