Possum Juniors' BYE BYE BIRDIE Opens Today

Possum Point Players' youth affiliate, Possum Juniors are singing and dancing their way toward opening night of their production of the Tony Award winning musical, 'Bye, Bye Birdie.' Production dates for the family-friendly show are July 23, 24, 25 and 26. Today, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 P.M.; Sunday matinee at 2 P.M. Possum Hall is at 441Old Laurel Highway, Georgetown. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $12 for children and senior citizens. New Exhibition Series from Broadcast Media Collection Launches in September at Jewish Museum

With a new, ongoing exhibition series called The Television Project, the Jewish Museum will introduce visitors to a dynamic part of its collection: the National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting (NJAB), the largest and most comprehensive body of broadcast materials on 20th century Jewish culture in the United States. The inaugural exhibition, The Television Project: Picturing a People, on view at the Jewish Museum from September 25, 2015 through February 14, 2016, will feature artistically significant program excerpts celebrating the brilliance of writing, directing, performance, and production in American television, as well as related works of art, artifacts, and ephemera. Picturing a People will include clips from the following programs: The Ed Sullivan Show, Northern Exposure, The Twilight Zone, The Goldbergs, The Simpsons, My Name is Barbra, and Eichmann Trial Coverage (ABC News).

It was a time of big cars, crewcuts, The Ed Sullivan Show, and beautiful music. On February 9th, 1964, a semi-professional harmony group from eastern Pennsylvania was on their way to their first big gig at the airport Hilton Cocktail Bar. While driving in their cherry-red 1954 Mercury convertible, they were rehearsing their finale when they were slammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager Catholic teens from Our Lady of Harrisburg. The teens were on their way to witness the Beatles make their U.S. television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, and miraculously escaped uninjured. The harmony group, however, was killed instantly.

Every so often a musical comes along that is just pure fun. In a humorous imitation of the likes of Elvis Presley and his fan girls, "Bye, Bye Birdie" became just such a production, followed by two film versions and earning a place in pop culture with well-known songs like "The Telephone Hour" and "Put on a Happy Face." Sacramento Music Circus adds to the entertainment this week with colorful costumes, authentic set pieces and a decked out cast.
