BWW Review: HOCUS POCUS at Roxy's Downtown, An Unauthorized Parody
by Craig Richardson - Oct 24, 2019

After World War II was over, we saw an increase in the American population thus characterizing that peace, love making lovers as 'the baby boomer' generation. They of course in turn gave birth to what is known as Generation X bringing a new age emergence of punk rock, grunge, and apparently both awesome and tasty cocktails. Generation X gave us millennials.

BWW Review: FORBIDDEN BROADWAY at Roxy's Downtown, A Prohibited Parody worth Seeing
by Craig Richardson - Jul 16, 2019

'Forbidden' is certainly a fitting adjective for Roxy's Downtown current production entitled Forbidden Broadway. If you simply look up the word 'forbidden' in the dictionary, you will find its meaning to be prohibited, not allowed or even banned. It's a clever little title to describe this Off-Broadway parody rated PG-13 which spoofs many lyrics and shows such as Mamma Mia, Cats, and even Hairspray which would send original playwrights and performing artists rolling in their graves with laughter. Opening originally in 1982 by parodist Gerard Alessandrini, the show has gone under many revisions to include even newer musicals. Starring Julia Faust, John Keckeisen, Seth Knowles, Shaun-Michael Morse, Patty Reeder, and Christine Tasheff, Forbidden Broadway runs from now until August 24 at the 1930s cabaret venue in downtown Wichita.

United Solo Theatre Festival to Present THE WRONG END OF THE TELESCOPE
by Ashlee Latimer - Oct 17, 2016

Where do writers get their ideas and inspirations? This is one of the questions that the Writer, the protagonist of this piece, will attempt answering. She will talk about her "visitors", and all "bad company" of the discontented people that provide her with material for her stories. Aspiring characters are usually miserable and terribly sad: "I suppose happy people don't have much to say. They're too busy being happy."

BWW Review: Natalie Douglas Breathtakingly (and Politically) Explores the Human Heart in CD Release Show at Birdland
by Remy Block - Mar 29, 2016

"I'm a black woman in America; breathing is political," stated Natalie Douglas, wryly, early in her March 21 concert at Birdland to celebrate the release of her excellent new recording Human Heart. I felt myself inwardly fist pump-yes! Douglas dared to acknowledge the contemporary political circus-which I, for one, am completely obsessed with-on the cabaret stage! Okay, I can relax-I will make it through this show without listening to a political podcast or reading a David Brooks New York Times opinion column after all. Phew! I have not entered a purely escapist fantasyland, but surrendered to the capable musical ensemble on stage. Douglas wore a long white gown (chosen out of the pile when her husband made an approvingly bawdy comment as she tried it on for him) and her band-all six of whom appear on the record-wore all black. The appearance was a study in contrast, but the group, was most assuredly a cohesive instrument.
