Producing Artistic Director Tim Dang Celebrates 20 Years with East West Players Today

Today, August 17th, East West Players (EWP), the nation's largest producing organization of Asian American artistic work and the longest-running professional theatre of color in the country, will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Tim Dang as Producing Artistic Director. This signature 'one night only' event takes place at East West Players, featuring some of the best talent to grace the EWP stage, along with dinner al fresco in the Aratani Courtyard, just outside the theater. Proceeds of One Night Only benefit the artistic/educational programs of East West Players and the organization's endowment.

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust today announced that the Sixth Annual Steinberg Playwright 'Mimi' Awards will be presented on Monday, November 18, 2013. La MaMa presents Maureen Fleming in the New York premiere of B. MADONNA. Created, choreographed, and performed by Fleming, it features text by Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang, music by Philip Glass performed live by pianist Bruce Brubaker, original accordion by Guy Klucevsek, Taiko drumming by Kaoru Watanabe and three-dimensional video projections by longtime collaborator Christopher Odo. Performances begin October 17 at The Ellen Stewart Theater at La MaMa. Please note: This performance contains nudity.

Sundance Institute Kicks Off LUMA Theatre Directors Retreat in Arles Today

Sundance Institute and the LUMA Foundation previously announced that the two organizations would collaborate to host The Sundance Institute | LUMA Foundation Theatre Directors Retreat at Domaine de l'Armelliere, today, July 29 - August 9, in Arles, France. Under the supervision of Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of The Sundance Institute Theatre Program, Producing Director Christopher Hibma and Program Associate Anne Kauffman, the Retreat will be the first theatre director-centered residency at the Institute.

First Annual Philadelphia One-Minute Play Festival Kicks Off Today

InterAct Theatre Company and the New York based company, The One-Minute Play Festival (OMPF) today announce their joint presentation of the First Philadelphia One-Minute Play Festival, to be performed tonight, July 29th-31st 2013 at 8:00 PM EST. Following sold-out performances in a dozen other cities, this festival serves as the culmination of a yearlong collaboration between the two companies after engaging in community and consensus building workshop sessions with local artists since August of 2012.

This year 14 students were selected from dozens of applicants from across the United States to participate in the 2013 Young Playwrights, Inc. Urban Retreat. The Urban Retreat is a nine day intensive in New York City that culminates in a staged reading off-broadway at the Lucille Lortell Theatre. The 2013 Urban Retreat Young Playwrights are: Ari Bell, Leah Bell, Jacqueline Crispino, Frank Garland, Jordan Eli Goldberg, Candace Hartsuyker, Leah Lane, Mollie Lipkowitz, Erin Neitzel, Dahlia Pham, Melina Schmidt, William Stieglitz, Irene Tapert, and Connor Woods.

Barn Theatre to Present ASL Interpreted Performance of TARZAN, 7/31

The Barn Theatre will host an American Sign Language Interpreted performance of the musical TARZAN on Wednesday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. Our Nationally Certified ASL interpreters will be Kathleen Robertson and Misti Ryefield. When a shipwreck leaves an infant boy orphaned on the shores of West Africa, the helpless baby is adopted and raised by a female gorilla Kala. Years later, Tarzan has grown into a young man. He begins to discover his uniqueness and yearns for acceptance from his ape father Kerchak.

Two Grants Awarded to National Corporate Theatre Fund for New Works and Theatre Education Across the U.S.

On July 10, the National Corporate Theatre Fund (NCTF) announced it has received two significant grants that will help develop exciting new works for theatre and strengthen innovative theatre education programs at NCTF's theatres across the country. The Ford Foundation awarded $250,000 to five significant regional theatres celebrating their 50th anniversaries-Actors Theatre of Louisville, Guthrie Theater, Hartford Stage, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Trinity Repertory Company through the National Corporate Theatre Fund. And The Hearst Foundations will award $100,000 to Impact Creativity which supports interdisciplinary and innovative theatre education programs at NCTF's 19 theatres, a critically important grant as arts education budgets are cut across the country.
