BWW Critic's Choices: Maine Best of 2013
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Dec 26, 2013

Despite its location far, far north, and its relatively sparse population compared to cultural capitals, Maine boasts a rich regional theatre climate. There are quite a few thriving, adventurous, permanent professional companies, as well as an excellent contingent of community theatres. This year offered a wealth of exciting choices. Here is my personal list for 2013, grouped by theatre company and show:

The new musical play by Artistic Director Marc Robin and Curt Dale Clark is funny, family-friendly... and a tribute to Fulton staff as well

Marc Robin's edits improve, though they can't perfect, the Broadway musical that tinkers with millions of childhood memories

BWW Interviews: Susan Cella Talks Texas Twirling in GYPSY at Maine State Music Theatre
by Scott Moreau - Jul 29, 2013

There's an old saying in theatre: "There are no small roles, just small actors". Despite her featured role as Tessie Tura in GYPSY at Maine State Music Theatre, her talent and impressive resume prove that she is no "small" actress. From understudying Patti LuPone in the original Broadway production of Evita, success in films and sitcoms, to becoming an MSMT favorite, it is clear to see why as soon as you see her on stage. Though, the audiences at MSMT might have a hard time convincing her that Brunswick's crowds are bigger fans than she is of the midcoast town.

BWW Reviews: Theatre Weekends In Brunswick, Maine
by Marakay Rogers - Jul 3, 2013

Brusnwick, Maine is home to galleries, restaurants, Bowdoin College, and Maine State Music Theatre. Theatre packages make Brunswick a great weekend getaway during the theatre season.

BWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Maine State Music Theatre is Anything BUT Miserable
by Scott Moreau - Jun 29, 2013

Les Mis. A French title, and a show so popular it has its own nickname. When the show premiered in London in 1985, some people wondered how on earth Victor Hugo's masterpiece of a novel could be turned into a musical. Those people have long since been silenced. Les Miserables has become one of the world's most beloved musicals, and Maine State Music Theatre's current production proves exactly why.

BWW Interviews: Curt Dale Clark Tackles Triple Roles at MSMT
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Jun 3, 2013

The dark, handsome man with twinkling blue eyes and classically chiseled features who sits opposite me at the Maine State Music Theatre has the look of a leading man. However, at this moment he is wearing his hat as the company's newly minted Artistic Consultant. Nonetheless, I am not wrong in my initial impression. Curt Dale Clark is, indeed, a leading man - a prominent actor who has tread the boards in major theatres across the country starring in roles such as Javert (Les Miserables), The Phantom (Phantom of the Opera), Don Lockwood (Singing in the Rain), and Joe Gillis (Sunset Boulevard). He is also the playwright and lyricist of a number of musical fairy tales, for which his longtime collaborator, Marc Robin has written the music. But this is the first juncture in a career that has spanned twenty-four years that Clark has had the opportunity to combine his creative and acting talents with his skills as a theatre administrator.

BWW Reviews: SINGIN' IN THE RAIN Brings the Motion Picture to Life at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre
by Michelle Petrucci - Jan 14, 2013

Recreating this iconic movie on the stage is an ever-daunting task but has been a staple of the regional theatre scene since it closed on Broadway in the mid 1980s. There are not many noticeable adaptations or deviations from the original Comden and Green 1952 film, and this may be an inherent flaw in the piece. Add to that the obvious preconceptions and expectations nearly every theatergoer has upon venturing out to experience a production, and any producer will know they have their work cut out for them. However, there is also something to be said for the ability to trust such a tried and true combination of song and dance that has the promise to delight on a presentational level, at the very least.
