Louis Armstrong House Museum to Announces Holiday Tours

Hear the rare recording of Louis Armstrong's magical reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (A Visit from St. Nicholas).' Enjoy holiday cheer this year at the Louis Armstrong House Museum with the museum's annual holiday tours! In keeping with Louis and Lucille's tradition, the house will be brightly decorated. From December 3rd through December 29th 2013, house tours will feature rare audio clips from Louis's personal recordings of himself and family celebrations at home. Listen to Louis's magical voice reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (A Visit from St. Nicholas)' and other seasonal favorites such as 'Zat You Santa Claus' and Louis listening to Nat King Cole sing 'All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.' Free candy canes included with museum admission.

On November 1, 2013, The New York Pops continues its 31st season in a return to the days when big bands ruled the dance floor with Tony Award nominee Montego Glover and Dave Bennett, clarinet, guest artists, joining the orchestra in an all-swing program, featuring a tribute to the 75th anniversary of Benny Goodman's legendary live recording at Carnegie Hall. Tonight, October 4, 2013, The New York Pops orchestra will launch its 31st Season at Carnegie Hall with An Evening with Chris Botti. Music Director and Conductor Steven Reineke will lead the orchestra in a highly-anticipated opening with America's largest-selling instrumental artist, trumpeter Chris Botti. The performance will include selections such as Chopin's 'Prelude in C Minor,' 'Emmanuel,' and 'When I Fall in Love' from his recent Grammy Award-winning album Impressions, as well as other popular favorites, at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage.

The twelve-piece jazz/Indian fusion orchestra from the Huntington Theatre Company's production of The Jungle Book will perform Out of the Jungle at Johnny D's Uptown in Somerville on Sunday, October 6 at 8:15pm. The one-night-only event is a cross-cultural celebration inspired by the collaboration among the orchestra's six Indian and six jazz musicians. Under the creative direction of Doug Peck, the ensemble will leave the score from the show behind to perform sets of North and South Indian traditional music and original and jazz standards - genres that both draw heavily on improvisation - in their unique style that combines the sounds of east and west.

On Friday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m. in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, The New York Pops under the direction of Music DirectorSteven Reineke is joined by Tony Award nominee Montego Glover and clarinetist Dave Bennett for Sing Sing Swing, an all-swing music program that harkens back to the era when big bands ruled the dance floor. The program also pays tribute to the 75th anniversary of Benny Goodman's storied debut at Carnegie Hall with his jazz orchestra. The concert, which took place on January 16, 1938, helped to elevate the status of swing music in the US and beyond, and included some of the brightest jazz luminaries of the day, including Count Basie and members of the Duke Ellington orchestra. The recording of Goodman's performance at Carnegie Hall remains one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.

The Music Institute of Chicago's fourth annual jazz festival celebrates the enduring legacy of Chicago's own Benny Goodman, featuring two concerts and the film The Benny Goodman Story November 1 and 2 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston. This two-day event shines a spotlight on the King of Swing, who first learned to play the clarinet at Chicago's famed Hull House.
