Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, as anyone who has ever committed suicide will tell you, is a comedy.  Maybe not as reflective a comedy as set designer Santo Loquasto's mirrored floor would suggest, but Russian director Vlachesalv Dolgachev's new production at Classic Stage Company neatly balances the humorous with the somber and, despite a few stumbles along the way, turns out to be a rather enjoyable and swift-moving three hours and fifteen minutes.

Michael Frayn is an English playwright and novelist. He began as a reporter for The Guardian and The Observer after graduating college in 1957. His first novel, The Tin Men, was published in 1965 winning him his first of many accolades. His other award winning novels include Headlong, The Russian Interpreter and Spies. Considered to be Britain's finest translator of Anton Chekhov, he adapted four major plays along with several smaller plays for an evening called The Sneeze in London in 1988. Theatrically, Frayn is the playwright for such well received plays including Noises Off, Copenhagen, and Democracy, which won the Tony Award in 2000.

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center today announced the eight plays to be developed at the 2008 National Playwrights Conference.

'Benefactors' was first staged in London in 1984 winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play before its Broadway premiere in 1985. The original Broadway cast included Glenn Close, Mary Beth Hurt, Simon Jones and Sam Waterston and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

Tony Award winner Mandy Patinkin returns to Broadway for one night only to benefit off-Broadway's Classic Stage Company on Monday, May 19.

Nicholas Martin today announced the programming for Williamstown Theatre Festival's (WTF) 54th Season, the first under his aegis as Artistic Director. Collaborators include David Ives, Michael Greif, Scott Ellis, Theresa Rebeck, and Julie White.

Resonance Ensemble's world-premiere new play Sherlock Solo: An Original Presentation by the Master Detective - written and performed by Victor L. Cahn as the greatest detective to ever aid Scotland Yard…Sherlock Holmes will end its limited run at Theatre Row's Kirk Theatre (410 West 42nd Street) on Saturday February 2nd, as previously announced.

Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Kulick and Executive Director Jessica R. Jenen, will continue its 40th anniversary season with two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming starring in Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, beginning performances Wednesday, February 20 at Classic Stage Company (136 East 13th Street).

The Roundtable Ensemble will present the world premiere of Chris Kipiniak's Save the World, a superhero-adventure play at the American Theatre of Actors. Performances will begin on Thursday, January 17, and the official opening night will be Saturday, January 19 at 8PM. Performances will run for four weeks through February 9.

Mackwell Productions will present Duet, an evening featuring the one-acts Sunrise by Tommy Smith and The Good Thing by Terry Diamond November 30 through December 8 at the Shelter Annex

The Alchemy Theatre Company of Manhattan, Inc presents Harvest by David Wright Crawford, off-Broadway at The Beckett (Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street). Judson Jones and Benard Cummings will direct. Previews begin on November 30 and the opening will be Tuesday, December 4 at 8PM.

On The Leesh Productions, Inc. presents a series of readings of works in progress on the dark nights of A Yorkshire Fairie Tale, Off Broadway, at the Michael Weller Theatre.
