Little Jazz Cats: Mardi Gras with Gotham Kings features trumpeter Alphonso Horne to bring the infectious sounds with his brass band to play Crescent City classics that are sure to get your little ones moving in their very own second line parade. Culture Project presents About Love, a new play with songs and music. Music and lyrics by jazz artist Nancy Harrow and script and direction by Will Pomerantz. About Love plays a limited four-week engagement, February 25 through March 22 at The Sheen Center (18 Bleecker Street at the corner of Elizabeth Street, NYC) in the Black Box Theater. The official opening is Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30PM. Abrons Arts Center is proud to present the world premiere of jazz singer, a theatrical exhumation of the first feature-length a?oesound filma?? The Jazz Singer, reinterpreted by director and performer Joshua William Gelb and composer and performer Nehemiah Luckett. Set on the Lower East Side, the 1927 film tells the story of a a?oejazz croonera?? forced to choose between his immigrant Jewish heritage and his aspirations of becoming a Broadway star. Though the film is historically significant for its integration of synchronized sound, it is most remembered for its controversial use of blackface. Gelb and Luckett's musical rendering offers a contemporary take on this distinctly American story, one that interrogates appropriation, assimilation, atonement, and whether escape from the specter of blackface is possible. jazz singer runs September 24a?"October 12 at Abrons Arts Center (466 Grand Street, Manhattan) with an opening set for September 29.

National Black Theatre Closes Its 50th Anniversary Season With 125th & FREEDOM

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) will close out its golden anniversary season this Saturday, June 29 with the final performance of 125th & FREEdom. . Created, written and choreographed by Ebony Noelle Golden, 125th & FREEdom is a five-hour, immersive public performance dance piece that is part dance party, part parade, part protest and ritual performance, and all Harlem. Exploring the question, "If Harriet Tubman were alive today, how would she free Black people?" the program transforms Harlem's iconic corridor into a stage with performances along 125th Street from the East River to the Hudson River. The piece, free and open to the public, premiered on June 8 and is the culmination of a 50th anniversary season for the trailblazing theatre which also saw productions including In Perpetual Flight: The Black Body in Migration, a special in-progress staged reading of the musical WiLDFLOWER by Jason Michael Webb and Lelund Durond Thompson, and The Mothers of the Movement: The Black Woman She Does Exist.

You'll hear unforgettable performances from jazz veterans including Warren Vaché, Houston Person, and Norman Simmons; up-and-comers like Veronica Swift, Christian Sands, and Peter and Will Anderson; and straight-ahead stalwarts such as Steve Turre, George Cables, Buster Williams, along with many more. These gifted players and others will pay tribute to a pantheon of jazz legends, including this year's featured honoree, trumpeter Randy Brecker; plus, the music of Randy Weston, Erroll Garner, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong will also be featured.
