His debut release for 4AD and first full-length since 2020’s breakthrough Giver Taker, the record includes recently released singles: powerful title track “The King,” the gently emotive “Father,” protest song “Animal,” and a new single out now, “Black Hole.”

Like the rest of The King, every sound heard on “Animal” comes from two instruments: an acoustic guitar and Anjimile’s own voice. Throughout, Anjimile’s feelings of rage and frustration are tinged with sardonicism, and the song is accompanied by an equally potent video directed by Robby Operman.

José James joins voices with Lalah Hathaway on a joyful new duet version of Bill Withers' classic song “Lovely Day,” which is available to stream or download today. The track features bassist Pino Palladino, keyboardist Kris Bowers, guitarist Brad Allen Williams, drummer Nate Smith, and a horn arrangement by trumpeter Takuya Kuroda. James' forthcoming album Lean On Me is a loving tribute to the legendary singer and songwriter in honor of Withers' 80th birthday year.
