BWW Review: THE PAJAMA GAME at Opéra De Rennes

After the concert version of West Side Story and an extensive tour of the musical Bells Are Ringing, director Jean Lacornerie and musical director Gérard Lecointe have chosen to collaborate again, delivering to the French public a comparatively little known musical of the 50s, The Pajama Game, which, outside being the work of the dream team Jerome Robbins directing, George Abbott writing the book, and Bob Fosse choreographing on Broadway for the very first time, stands as perhaps the only musical dealing with unions and labor conflicts. The least we can say is that this choice couldn't be more on point given the political context of France today, with major strikes going on in sync with the show, which began its run at Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse in Lyon, followed by an extensive tour at the Théâtre de la Renaissance, also in the Lyon area, and now for a three-day run at the gorgeous Opéra de Rennes, where I caught a sold out performance on February 1st.
BWW Review: HUCKELBERRY FINN at Théâtre De La Huchette

After the Trophy winners La Poupée Sanglante and Comedians!, to mention but a couple, Franck Desmedt has brought another jewel the tiny but cosy Thétre de la Huchette.
CROSSING THE LINE Festival 2019 Announced At FIAF

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. The festival runs from September 12 to October 12. Ticket are available at crossingtheline.org.

Chris Thorpe's Status To Tour The UK

When Chris Thorpe performed his one-man show Status at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe, he claimed, provocatively, it wasn't about Brexit. Now, as the withdrawal date draws ever nearer, the Fringe First-winning, globe-spanning show about how we acquire our national identity, and what happens when we try to escape it, confronts head on the guilt, alienation and identity crisis experienced in response to the biggest political upheaval of the Century.

BAM presents Théâtre de la Ville's hilarious Ionesco Suite

Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota and seven actors from his Theatre de la Ville put five Ionesco plays into a blender and serve up a potpourri of absurdity, hilarity, befuddlement, and witticism. Demarcy-Mota, whose affinity for 20th-century playwrights was masterfully displayed in three previous BAM engagements (Rhinoceros, 2012 Next Wave;Six Characters in Search of an Author, 2014 Next Wave; State of Siege, 2017 Next Wave), returns with a boldly conceived and delicately executed production. Framed as a buttoned-up family dinner that sinks into no-holds-barred inebriation, the scenes and texts of Jack, or The Submission; Delirium for Two; The Bald Soprano; The Lesson; and Conversation and French Speech Exercises are chopped up and reassembled into this constantly surprisingIonesco Suite.

'Manta' to Perform at Théâtre de la Cité Internationale, 4/6-4/16
