Rejoicing in the inspired melodies and theatrical mastery each year, Pacific Symphony performs the Baroque masterpiece as a festive prelude to Christmas and the celebration of Christ's birth. Loved across the world, “Messiah” has been performed for almost 275 years, but with each performance, it becomes a fresh and newly invigorating experience. This year, conductor George Hanson takes the reins to lead the orchestra along with Pacific Chorale (John Alexander, artistic director) and a quartet of globally distinguished soloists—soprano Shannon Mercer, mezzo-soprano Renée Tatum, tenor John Bellemer and baritone Stephen Bryant.

Kent Tritle, New Chair of Manhattan School of Music Organ Department, to Perform Annual Recital, 11/18


Manhattan School of Music (MSM) recently announced the appointment of Kent Tritle, also the School's Director of Choral Activities, as Chair of its historic Organ Department. Tritle, who the New York Times has hailed as "the brightest star in New York's choral music world," is organist for both the New York Philharmonic (since 1994) and American Symphony Orchestra (since 1993), as well as serving as Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He is also Music Director of both Musica Sacra, the longest continuously performing professional chorus in New York, and the acclaimed Oratorio Society of New York.

The story focuses on the Prophet Elijah and tells several dramatic episodes relating to him. The SDSO previously partnered with the Cathedral of St. Joseph in 2012.

Music Academy Announces 2015 Summer Season


The Music Academy of the West will present the world-renowned New York Philharmonic in its first-ever performance at the historic Santa Barbara Bowl as well as a new production of Gioachino Rossini's comic opera Cinderella as part of the Academy's 68th annual Summer Festival. The Music Academy will present some 200 events, including more than 80 that are free, over the course of its coming season, which begins June 15 and concludes August 8. Additional highlights will include performances by pianists Jeremy Denk and Leon Fleisher, the Takács and JACK quartets, cellist Alban Gerhardt, and tenor Anthony Dean Griffey, as well as orchestra concerts led by Christoph von Dohnányi, Courtney Lewis, Nicholas McGegan, Larry Rachleff, and Osmo Vänskä. Throughout its 2015 Summer Festival, the Academy will highlight the music of living composers, including Carter Pann, Mason Bates, Kalevi Aho, Pierre Jalbert, Steve Reich, Thomas Adès, Caroline Shaw, and Pierre Boulez. Featuring the Academy's exceptionally talented fellows, together with distinguished guest performers and faculty, the events will be presented at the Academy's scenic Miraflores campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara. Subscription sales have begun; individual tickets will go on sale Saturday, April 25.
