Bruch is best known for his romantic First Violin Concerto, whose lyricism and bravado have made it a perfect showcase for a virtuoso like Pinchas Zukerman. The great violinist Joseph Joachim called it rich and seductive—no doubt for its rapturous middle movement, with its sweeping arpeggios for the violin, and hints of fiery and fanciful melodies in the finale. Many consider Dvo?ák’s Seventh Symphony his most perfect, a work of stunning beauty, drama, and melodic riches, with an ending that feels like an embrace of sunlight.
