Return To LALA Land will begin a monthly showcase at 13th Street Repertory Theater joining such long running works as Line, Black Panther Women, The OverShare Cabaret and others.
Premiering August 20 at 7:30 p.m., LALA Land is the biographical tale of LaForrest Cope (a.k.a. LaLa), a highly successful musician/songwriter/performer and her struggle to recreate herself for a modern world despite a golden past that threatens to crush her under its glittery weight.
Commanding the Billboard charts with four top-five songs in two years, Lala's brilliance helped launch several careers, most notably, Whitney Houston with the song, "YOU GIVE GOOD LOVE," which earned LaLa, a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Song and an ASCAP Honors Award for Most Played Songs in the 1985 Survey Year (an award she shared with Prince), as well as raising Ann Landers' eyebrows at its "suggestive" lyrics. It gave Whitney her first #1 single as well. She has played and sang with, written for, and produced artists as diverse as Ice Cube, Lauryn Hill, Christina Aguilera, Luther Vandross Melba Moore, FrEddie Jackson, Stephanie Mills, Johnny Gill and Burt Bacharach.
Starring La Forrest Cope with Freddy Dugard, Chris Fougere and Joe Battista. Directed by Joe Battista, produced by Roslyn Mckay, and developed by Battista, Mark Roslyn, La Forrest Cope, Freddy Dugard and Chris Fougere, with stage manager Allison Hohman.
Performances play 13th Street Repertory Theater, 50 West 13th Street, NYC. Tickets: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2580478.
