The award-winning LA-based ZOMBIE JOE’S UNDERGROUND THEATRE GROUP will present its new production of “URBAN DEATH” at The Players Theatre, 115 MacDougal Street (at Minetta Lane) beginning previews on Thursday, October 9th and opening Friday, October 10th at 11 PM.    Zombie Joe himself describes “URBAN DEATH” as “a terrifying new production of inexplicable horrors, unfathomable monstrosities and the disturbed spirits that walk among us!  The lights come up on a pile of grotesquely intertwined corpses in a mass grave.  As the dead turn into zombies, you see over 30 horrifying vignettes in just under 60 minutes.  Be warned: Blood will be spilled and guts will be a-flyin’ in this R-rated scare-fest.”

URBAN DEATH will be produced and directed by Zombie Joe. For more information about Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group, go to www.ZombieJoes.com.

The late-night Halloween horror spectacular will play Thursdays at 11 PM, and Friday and Saturday nights at 11 PM and 12:30 AM at The Players Theatre, 115 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village.  Tickets at $30 are available through www.theatermania.com or (212) 352-3101.  Discounts are available for groups/students/seniors. The Players Theatre Box Office opens one hour prior to performance.  Note this production is R-Rated and not suitable for children under 14.

The horrific display serves up torture and madness in the company’s ‘bloody-shoestring’ style of stylized physicality and strange soundscapes from an original score by Christopher Reiner.

Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group sprouted from a small industrial garage in Southern California’s San Fernando Valley in 1992.  Zombie Joe founded the company based on the ground-breaking theatrical doctrines of Antonin Artaud (the 20th Century French dramatist who advocated a theatre of cruelty), Bertolt Brecht, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky and George Lucas.

Building on the traditions of these innovators, Zombie Joe developed his own style of ‘progressive’ theatre, blending high impact, fast-moving, tightly-chiseled live theatre.  Zombie Joe’s productions combine classical and original works.  Now based in the No-Ho Arts District of North Hollywood, CA, the company made its New York debut this fall with their original award-winning adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Masque of the Red Death” which has been nominated for three LA Weekly Theatre Awards.  The LA Times described Zombie Joe’s Underground as ‘a model of barebones ingenuity’ and LA Weekly called the company ‘one of Los Angeles’ living treasures.’ The group won the LA Weekly Award as 2007 Best One-Act Ensemble for “Masque of the Red Death” as well as several Artistic Director Achievement Awards (ADA).   In 2005 the original production of URBAN DEATH was nominated for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Director (Zombie Joe) by The Valley Theatre League’s Artistic Director Achievement Awards.
