TRU to Stage Reading of THE HUMMINGBIRDS, 6/22 at SoHo Playhouse

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU), Molly Morris and Patrick Blake present The Hummingbirds by Garret Jon Groenveld on Monday, June 22, 2015 at 7pm at the SoHo Playhouse, 15 Vandam Street, NYC. This two-hander will now feature acclaimed actors Ellen McLaughlin and Eric Berryman and will be directed as a staged reading by Eric Tucker (Wall Street Journal Director of The Year, 2014).

Welcome to a very special room in the Bureau of Unemployment in a possible near future where unemployment, multiple wars, and domestic terrorism are just a bit worse than they are today. Not to mention that if you've been out of work for too long, a job is assigned to you. It may not be a job you are qualified to do. It may not be a job that's safe for anyone to do. But you have to do it. Your future is in their hands.

The Hummingbirds was developed as part of the inaugural Writers in Residence program at the Playwrights' Foundation in San Francisco. It was the winner of the 2012 Global Age Project as well as the winner of the 2012 Internationalists' Global Playwriting Competition. It has had development support from the Playwrights' Foundation, Red Fern and the Lark Play Development Center and is being developed by producers Molly Morris and Patrick Blake for a New York production.

The evening is part of The 2015 TRU Voices Play Reading Series, the 17th annual series of new plays by TRU writers produced by TRU producers. The reading is taking place Monday June 22nd at 7:00pm at the SoHo Playhouse located at 15 Vandam Street and will be followed by a Dollars and Sense panel discussion with industry leaders Georgia Buchanan, Neil Danoff and Jeremy Handelman. Attendees will be given an insider's look at the producing process and the development track for a new play. An encore presentation of The Hummingbirds is being held Tuesday June 23rd at 3:00pm at the Desotelle Black Box theatre located at 300 West 43rd street, 3rd Floor, in the Times Square Arts Center.

The 2015 TRU Voices Play Reading Series concludes with searchers.net on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 7pm at the SoHo, 15 Vandam Street, NYC. The reading will be followed by a wine and cheese reception and the "Dollars and Sense" panel on producing.

The purpose of the series is to help develop new plays, help producers, namely, PDMP producers of the TRU Producer Development & Mentorship Program develop the skills needed to produce new works, and foster the producer-writer relationship for future development beyond our series. Each reading will be followed by a wine and cheese reception and "Dollars and Sense" panel discussion with prominent New York producers, general managers and artistic directors focusing on potential venues, marketing and budgeting of the works presented. Attendees will be given an insider's look at the producing process and the development track for a new play.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is a twenty-three year old 501c3 nonprofit organization created to help producers produce, emerging theater companies to emerge healthily and all theater professionals to understand and navigate the business of theater. Membership includes self-producing artists as well as career producers and theater companies.

TRU publishes an email community newsletter of services, goods and productions; presents the TRU VOICES Annual New Play Reading Series and Annual New Musicals Reading Series, two new works series in which TRU underwrites developmental readings to nurture new shows as well as new producers for theater; TRU offers a Producer Development & Mentorship Program whose mentors are among the most prominent producers and general managers in New York Theater, and also presents Producer Boot Camp workshops to help aspirants develop the business skills they need. TRU serves writers through a Writer-Producer Speed Date, a Practical Playwriting Workshop, a Director-Writer Communications Lab and How to Write a Musical That Works; programs for actors include an Annual Combined Audition and quarterly Resource Nights and "Speed Dating" as well as free monthly actor workshops, in partnership with Weist-Barron Studios.
