Irish Rep Continues New Works Reading Series with CEASEFIRE SOLDIERS Today

Irish Repertory Theatre continues its 11th season of the New Works Reading Series with a staged reading of Jimmy Murphy's play CEASEFIRE SOLDIERS. Directed by Irish Rep Literary Manager Kara Manning, the reading will take place today, June 23, 2017 at 3:00pm at Irish Rep Theatre (132 West 22nd Street) on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage. The cast for CEASEFIRE SOLDIERS will include Ciarán Byrne* (Juno and the Paycock, The Freedom of the City); Billy Carter* (Shining City, The Weir); Sean Gormley* (Transport, The Weir); and Geraldine Hughes* (Molly Sweeney, Jerusalem).

After a meticulously planned Irish Republican Army bomb attack goes tragically wrong in London's Soho district, the members of the newly formed Active Service Unit break rank and flee, never to set eyes on each other again-until 25 years later, when a voice from the grave reminds them that as "On The Runs," their war never ended. As the CEASEFIRE SOLDIERS recount the events of that day, they start to wonder if they had an informer in their ranks.

Jimmy Murphy (Playwright). Jimmy's plays for the Abbey Theatre include Brothers of the Brush, A Picture of Paradise, The Muesli Belt, Of This Brave Time and most recently A Whisper Anywhere Else. Other plays include The Kings Of the Kilburn High Road and The Castlecomer Jukebox (Red Kettle), What's left of the Flag, Perfidia and The Kiss, Theatre Upstairs. In 2007, an Irish language version of The Kings Of the Kilburn High Road, "Kings"' was Ireland's first official entry in the Best Foreign Language category at the Oscars. He is an honorary member of the Abbey's Advisory Council, a former Writer in Residence at Maynooth University and in 2004 was elected a member of Aosdána.
