59E59 Theaters welcomes the return of Fishamble: The New Play Company with the New York City premiere of I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW (THE WHEELCHAIR ON MY FACE), written and performed by Sonya Kelly and directed by Gina Moxley. Part of Origin's 1st Irish at 59E59 Theaters, I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW (THE WHEELCHAIR ON MY FACE) begins performances on Tuesday, September 10 for a limited engagement through Sunday, September 29. And Sonya thought everyone else experienced the world in a blur of colors, just like her. But after spending her childhood seeing through imperfect eyes, what happens when she looks at the world through a pair of glasses? Little Miss Sunshine meets My Left Foot, this 'delightfully whacky' (Irish Times) comedy won the coveted Fringe First Award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Following hugely successful runs in New York with The Pride of Parnell Street at
59E59 Theaters in 2009 and Silent at the
Irish Arts Center in 2012, Fishamble returns with this endearing story of childhood myopia that "will please viewers of all lens-prescriptions and none" (Irish Theatre Magazine).
Sonya Kelly's (playwright/performer) theater work includes The Heiress, Long Day's Journey Into Night, A Christmas Carol, Lady Windermere's Fan, As You Like It, The Odd Couple (
Gate Theatre); The Way You Look Tonight, The Playboy Of The Western World (Druid Theatre); The Seagull (The Corn Exchange); Wired to the Moon (Fishamble: The New Play Company); Rhinoceros, The Waiting Room (Kabosh Theatre); The Idiots and One (Pan Pan); Zap! (Project Brand New); and The Odd Couple (The Mill Theatre). Dublin Fringe work includes The House Of Blue Leaves, The Truth Of The Moon and The Wheelchair on My Face. Sonya has also performed her own work on the comedy circuit in Ireland, the UK and America. She is a cast member of R.T. E.'s The Savage Eye. The Wheelchair on My Face, directed by Gina Moxley and produced by Fishamble: The New Play Company, won a Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe 2012. The show has toured to over forty venues and continues to tour in Ireland and internationally in 2013. Sonya is part of ADVANCE, a mentoring initiative cordinated by Rough Magic Theatre Company.
Gina Moxley (director) is an actor, writer, and director. Most recently she toured with Pan Pan's in The Rehearsal, Playing the Dane. Also with Pan Pan she performed in The Crumb Trail, which she also wrote and toured extensively as Jocasta in Oedipus Loves You. Other recent theatre includes Boss Grady's Boys (Gaiety), Corcadorca's medEia and Prime Cut's Woman and Scarecrow. Film appearances include The Other Side of Sleep, Cluck, This is My Father, The Butcher Boy, Saltwater, and Clash of the Ash; and on TV: Game of Thrones, Titanic, Stardust, Any Time Now and No Tears. Gina's stage plays include Tea Set (Fishamble), Danti-Dan (Rough Magic), Dog House, Toupées and Snare Drums (CoisCéim/Abbey), A Heart of Cork and Map of M; Revised. She has written a number of plays for radio and has published some short stories. She directed two of her own plays Tea Set and The Candidate for Sidhe at Belltable, Limerick in 2009.
