Dr. Bettina Love to Speak at Newark Arts Education Summit 6/3

By:

Arts education thrives in the City of Newark. All Newark families, artists, teachers, community members and leaders will have the tools and information they need to ensure its accessibility in the city with the help of the Newark Arts Education Roundtable.

On Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 9 AM - 3 PM, The Newark Arts Education Roundtable (NAER) will present Developing Creative Minds: A City-Wide Arts Education Summit designed for the Newark community to learn about city-wide arts opportunities and initiatives. Recommended for persons of all ages, the summit will feature performances from Newark students, arts workshops for children and teens presented by NAER member organizations, and key advocacy discussions facilitated by the New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, NJ Arts Census and more. The summit will be held at the newly opened Express Newark space in the Hahnes & Co building, 54 Halsey Street, Newark.

Special guests include keynote speaker Dr. Bettina Love, an award-winning author, professor, researcher and founder of Real Talk: Hip Hop Education for Social Justice who will hold a Q & A session with Newark youth, following her keynote. This event is free and open to the public. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Newark is New Jersey's largest and second most diverse city. Made up of five distinct wards, the city's neighborhoods are populated by people from backgrounds representing almost every continent. The summit aims to create a space where the development of the mind of children through arts learning is at the center of uniting these communities. With the tools gained from the summit, communities can collectively impact the direction of arts learning in their city and neighborhoods.

NAER will be providing translation services for non-English speaking community members delivering on its mission to ensure equitable access to high quality arts opportunities.

"This summit, funded by the NEA, is an example of the power of a collective community. It will serve as a celebration of what we have accomplished and a call to action about the work we have yet to do. By sharing data and resources with families, educators, policymakers, and funders, we will strive to increase quality arts education access for all Newark youth," says NAER Director Lauren Meehan.

About The Newark Arts Education Roundtable
Launched in 2009, The Newark Arts Education Roundtable is a strategic alliance of arts education stakeholders, including parents; district, charter and private schools; artists; arts and cultural organizations; youth and community development entities; businesses; funders and state and local agencies. The Newark Arts Education Roundtable's mission is to collaborate to ensure that all children in grades PreK-12 in the city of Newark have equitable access to high quality, sequential arts education opportunities, both in and out of school. The NAER is made possible in part by the generous support of the Prudential Foundation, Victoria Foundation, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, The Turrell Fund, and a Collective Impact grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
