The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) makes its Southern Theater debut with two woodwind duos in works by Steve Reich, John Zorn, Philippe Hurel, Richard Barrett, Felipe Lara and the world premiere of Residence on Earth Part 1: El Gran Oceáno by Minneapolis native and McKnight Visiting Composer (2009-10) Ryan Ingebritsen. A "powerhouse of new-music programming" (The New Yorker), ICE brings its tight-knit virtuosity, youthful intensity and emotional chemistry to the Southern stage for an adventurous program sure to melt the coldest of winter hearts.

Notes on Residence on Earth Part 1: El Gran Oceáno by Ryan Ingebritsen:
Based on the poem El Gran Oceáno by Pablo Neruda, Residence on Earth Part 1: El Gran Oceáno will consist of pre-recorded text in the original Spanish, electronically filtered by the sound of the instruments. It will be first in a series of works Ingebritsen plans to write entitled Residence on Earth. The series will be a set of pieces focused around texts by Neruda regarding his observations of the physical world and its relation to man. "Neruda's method of describing nature, emotion, memory and love have insight into the hidden nature of the universe which lies just beyond our perception," said Ingebritsen, "and I want the music to reflect this intuition." He added, "Neruda's poetry has taught me as much about music as the things I have learned about orchestration and composition as a student, so this ode to the poet is especially appropriate for me."
