Comedy Improv is set to host a free night of laughs on Thursday, July 23. Meet professional actors Danielle Miller and Bre Weitzel at 6:00pm at Lake of the Woods School.

Pequana’s first production, held in early 1983 with the aid of a Region 2 Arts and Humanities Council grant, was The Wizard of Oz. Public reaction prior to opening was amused and indulgent: the general attitude was that it was nice that we wanted to have a community theater but it just wouldn’t work in this area. The Wizard of Oz surprised many by being well done, and people began to look forward with anticipation to the next production.

Barefoot in the Park was next, again aided by a Region 2 grant. Response was so positive that an extra performance was scheduled. In the summer of 1983 Pequana produced a children’s musical, Once Upon a Brutebeast. This production was not as well received as the first two, probably because no one had ever heard of it and because it was held in the summer when people are a lot busier than the rest of the year.

In the spring of 1984 Ten Little Indians played to an average audience of about 80 per night (the same as The Wizard of Oz and Barefoot in the Park). By this time area residents were contacting Pequana members and asking what would be next and volunteering to become involved in some capacity. Local businesses requested advertising space in the programs and offered to donate some of the materials needed for productions.

The next play, in October 1984, was Dracula, Darling, another play no one had ever heard of. This time the response was good. One might assume that Pequana’s credibility as a provider of quality drama had been established.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Other productions and events offered by Pequana include South Pacific, Annie Get Your Gun, A Christmas Carol, Plaza Suite, Dirty Work at the Crossroads, a traveling production of Talley's Folly (a summer mime theater company), children’s summer story-time programs and a theater arts workshop.

In addition, Pequana Playhouse has assisted with local school productions through the loan of equipment for a period of time and financial assistance for purchasing lights in 2002.

Most recently some Pequana members were seen in the “Night of One Acts” presented by Lake of the Woods School in the spring of 1999, the spring of 2000, and the spring of 2001. Pequana also provided entertainment for LakeWood Health Center’s big antique auction fund-raiser held at Sportsman’s Lodge in August of 1999 and again in August of 2000. And Pequana’s most recent productions include a repeat of A Christmas Carol in 1999, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and the musicals Annie in 2000, Joseph and the Technicolor® Dreamcoat in 2002, and Fiddler on the Roof (with the biggest orchestra ever) in 2003.Joseph and the Technicolor® Dreamcoat

In 2001 Pequana presented a summer children’s theater production of Charlotte’s Web, and in 2002 Pequana sponsored a one-day artist-in-residence improvisational workshop for Lake of the Woods School with a repeat for adults the following day. In 2002 Pequana also sponsored its “First Annual” Variety Show. The one-day artist-in-residence workshop was repeated in 2003, this time the topic was on how to audition and impress a casting director.
Undoubtedly a lot of important history has been missed here. Please e-mail notes about anything you remember to Pequana Playhouse so we can make our history more complete. And watch for future events. Everyone is welcome to become involved in any capacity — as part of a production or activity, as a spectator, as a supporting member.
