Registration is open for Playhouse on the Square's Theatre School. Playhouse on the Square offers classes in acting, music, and dance for ages 5 through adult. Adult classes begin January 6, 2014. Saturday youth classes begin January 25th. All classes are held at the Jeanne and Henry Varnell Theatre Education building at 1711 Poplar Avenue.

Theatre School classes are designed to provide a fun and challenging experience for both the beginner and the experienced performer. Taught by local theatre professionals, Playhouse on the Square's classes give students the opportunity to develop and expand their performance skills, including character development, movement, voice, and an awareness of proper audition practices. Each session ends with an informal showcase performance at The Circuit Playhouse for family and friends.

Adult Classes - Mondays & Tuesdays, January 6 - February 25

Basics for the Beginning Actor - $150

Mondays, 6:00pm - 7:30pm

Participants will explore character development and intention through scenes and monologues. Students will also learn theatrical terminology, where to look for performance opportunities, and what to expect when auditioning for a play. This is the perfect class for people who have always wanted to explore their creative talents in a non-threatening, supportive environment.

Advanced Acting - $150

Mondays, 7:30pm - 9:00pm

This class is for people who have taken either several acting classes, performed in several plays, or both. Students can expect to dig into character analysis, physicality, and vocal production. Scenes from strong published plays will form the backbone of the work and provide a challenge for people who already have a basic understanding of the art form.

Tap Dancing for Non-Dancing Adults - $120

Tuesdays, 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Feel the rhythm and show off at parties! This class is just as the title states...no experience is required, though any experience is welcome. After this class, you'll be able to show off your moves at a cocktail party without spilling your drink! Bring your tap shoes and come on in for a fun time!

Musical Theatre

Tuesdays, 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Students in this class will explore musical theatre songs, learn their singing ranges, and prepare musical theatre pieces for the showcase. Through this, participants will come to understand proper selection of music for auditions, how to develop a character through song, and how to find comfortability on stage while singing. This is a good class for everyone from the beginner to the seasoned performer

Youth Classes - Saturdays, January 25 - March 22

AGES 5-7

We Tell Stories - $120

Saturdays, 9:00am - 10:00am

In this class, we'll use music, art, dance, and drama to turn a picture book into a play! Students will be guided through basic theatre techniques within the framework of a favorite story. Our imaginations will be on display in our final showcase. We'll investigate a favorite story and create a simple performance for the showcase!

AGES 7 -11

Musical Theatre - $120

Saturdays, 9:00am - 10:00am

Sing your heart out! In this class, we'll explore musical theatre songs and learn how to develop a character while singing. We'll also learn the basics of proper singing technique. Students will share Musical Theatre pieces in the final showcase.

Theatrical Dance - $120

Saturdays, 10:00am - 11:00am

Explore basic jazz dance techniques ranging from studio-based jazz to jazz for musical theatre, including the proper way to prepare and condition the body for dance.

Foundations of Acting - $120

Saturdays, 11:00am - 12:00pm

All actors must work from the foundations of their trade in order to excel in their craft. This class is designed to explore and develop the actor's tools so students can shine. Students will use these tools to bring pieces to life for the showcase.

AGES 12 - 17

Improvisation Extravaganza - $120

Saturdays, 10:00am - 11:00am

Learn the fundamentals of improv! In this class, students will explore various improv techniques and learn to think on their feet. No previous improv experience is required, but any experience is welcomed! Make discoveries and grow as a performer with this class.

Triple Threat - $150

Saturdays, 11:00am - 12:30pm

The musical theatre performer must constantly hone his or her skills in acting, singing, and dancing. In this class, you'll do all three simultaneously. Truly sell numbers at the showcase!

The Science of Scenework - $150
Saturdays, 12:30pm - 2:00pm

Working with other actors in a scene is the foundation of a successful play. In this class, students will dig into script analysis and character by working on scenes with classmates. Prepared scenes will be shared at the showcase.
