FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“PRAY TO BALL” WORLD PREMIER AT THE SKYLIGHT THEATER

The Skylight Theater in Los Angeles has announced the March, 2014 World premier of the original play, Pray to Ball, written by Amir Abdullah and directed by Bill Mendieta.

Pray to Ball is the engaging and poignant story of two life long friends, Hakeem and Lou, superstar collegiate basketball players who are living life large in Miami and are ready to make the jump to the NBA next season. When tragedy strikes, Hakeem begins searching for a deeper meaning to life, and turns to the controversial and involved world of Islam, which creates a rift within the relationship with his best friend. “Pray to Ball” is a play about life, relationships and the sacrifices that we all have to make in order to hold onto all that we value most, without losing ourselves along the way.

Amir Abdullah (Playwright) hails from the small, big city of Jacksonville, Florida. He has lived coast to coast and has also spent extensive time in England. Born an American-Muslim, his art reflects the "new America" which is a clash of cultures that interact beyond their surface comfort zones of ethnic, cultural, and religious ideology. Amir earned his BFA from the University of Miami and his MFA in acting from Penn State University. Some film/TV Credits include: “The Untimely Concurrence,” (Winner: Best Actor, Movieville Int'l Film Fest 2012), “Love: As You Like It,” “GOLIATH the Film,” Tosh. 0 “Headlines.” Amir’s Regional Theatre Credits include: Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's Othello, the Remix in Edinburgh, UK and Eddie Fisker in Ctrl+Alt+Delete at The Pennsylvania Centre Stage. In Los Angeles, he has appeared at the New American Theatre, The Skylight Theatre Company, and is a proud company member of Theatre Banshee in Burbank.

Bill Mendieta (Director) having a love for theatre, continues to work in regional theaters around the country, doing new plays, classics and musicals. Currently, he is performing in I Love Lucy, Live On Stage, as Ricky Ricardo, in the first live version of the famous show, and is receiving critical acclaim and garnering awards, recently, a Broadway World award for Best Lead Actor in a musical. Bill has worked with such theatre companies as the The Antaeus Company, Andak Stage Company, Crown City Theatre Company, The Road Theatre, The Ensemble Theatre, The Actors Co-op, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the San Jose Repertory Theatre, California and San Francisco Shakespeare Festivals, Nevada Shakespeare in the Park, and El Teatro Campesino. He also co-wrote, produced and directed the comedy web series: Mob Boss Associate, directed the short films: Dodgy Dish, Slow Dance, and the plays: Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the world premiere of Beauty, Brains and Personality. He did staging and a music video for Tango Del Cielo, and directed video product test spots for Mattel. He has taught numerous acting and creative workshops, working with Will and Company through the Music Center in Los Angeles, Shakespeare At Play, The Antaeus Company, and the Joffrey Ballet.
