The Ahakista Community Association presents 'Music by Candlelight' at St. Patrick's church Ahakista, West Cork, on Friday, 11th September at 8pm.

This fundraising concert will feature Evelyn Grant (RTE lyric fm) on flute and piano, harpist Jean Kelly, soprano Camilla Griehsel and 'cellist Gerry Kelly. The concert will feature music from the Baroque era, through Turlough O'Carolan's Irish classics to the up-beat Latin rhythms of Astor Piazzolla.

This event is a fundraiser for Ahakista Community Association which is also supported by one of Ireland's favourite sons and local resident, the inimitable Graham Norton. Concert tickets are €15.00 and available from Arundel's By The Pier, 027 67033. Arundel's are also offering a pre concert 3 course dinner for €25.00

Soprano, Camilla Griehsel will include some folk songs from her native Sweden, and the tango 'Yo soy Maria', one of the hits from Piazzola's 'Maria de Buenas Aires', in which she starred at the Cork Opera House. Camilla has over thirty years of international professional singing, in a range of roles and disciplines. From pop recording artist to avant-garde opera, traditional jazz to South American folk, Camilla is dedicated to breaking down barriers through the intimacy of music.

Jean Kelly will perform a range of harp tunes from arrangements by her grandfather TC Kelly to Handel's famous harp concerto. ( One of Jean's maternal ancesters, Thomas Roseingrave, sang in the first performance of Handel's 'Messiah')

The concert will also include a selection from the musical South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein and Bizet's Carmen. Evelyn and Gerry will perform popular flute and cello solos and are looking forward to working with their London based daughter Jean. Jean performs across all genres on the harp and plays Concert harp, Irish harp, baroque harp, Welsh triple harp, and electric harp . She has a busy career in Concert Halls, Film Studios, and on the folk music circuit with her band 'Ranagri'. She has performed on a wide range of movies from 'The Lord of the Rings' to 'We need to talk about Kevin' (a collaboration with Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood- which was shown in the Cannes Film Festival.) Jean's latest collaboration is with Tony Christie whose album 'The Great Irish Song Book', with Ranagri will be released later this month. A review of a concert performance with the Locrian ensemble stated "the harp was if an angel had descended and was touching the evening with her finger tips".

Evelyn Grant will present the concert and is looking forward to giving her first performance in Ahakista. She is well known to primary schools in the area through her educational work for West Cork Music. Gerry Kelly has been an active member of the local community since taking on a role as PR adviser and photographer for the annual Graham Norton Ahakista Quiz, in aid of the Ahakista Community Association.

There will be a pre concert dinner in Arundel's by the pier. Telephone 02767033 for concert and dinner bookings.
