The friends Guglielmo and Ferrando, both army officers, are convinced that their fiancées truly love them. But Don Alfonso wagers that no woman is capable of fidelity. The two young men accept the bet, and in order to test the two women, they pretend to have been called off to war. Then they return in disguise, and each of them attempts to woo the other’s bride. The experiment is a "success"…

One year after the French Revolution, Mozart demonstrates with Così fan tutte that not only political order but also the cornerstones of social life such as marriage can be made to falter - an inflammatory concept which caused the work to be neglected from moral considerations for a long period. Today, however, Così fan tutte is considered one of the sharpest and most modern of Mozart's compositions. By employing paintings from the rococo period in his staging, Alvis Hermanis establishes a bridge between us and the iridescent eroticism of the 18th-century – an archaeology of sentiment which sheds fresh light on this equally disturbing and liberating work.
