"Hansel and Gretel" is the winter break play in five days for students in grades 3-6. Day one, Dec. 23, participants will audition, paint backdrops, gather props, and collect props. Days two through five, Dec. 27-30, are dedicated to rehearsals. A performance for family and friends will be held on the final day.

Candy Land, Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, and other sweet stories will give students in grades 1-2 Visions of Sugarplums, Dec. 27-30. These stories are the inspiration for role-playing, songs, and games. Participants will learn a song to sing in the Friday performance of "Hansel and Gretel."

Students in grades 7-12 can participate in The Playhouse's PIP program (pre-intern program). During winter break, Dec. 27-30, PIPs will work with Playhouse designers Tim Wisgerhof, Angela Lampe, and Kevin Shelby, and technical director Nathan Coon, to receive technical theatre certification. Backstage skills, including basic carpentry, painting, sewing, and lighting techniques, and the responsibilities associated with various run crew positions will be covered. Guest directors, stage managers, and designers will also meet with PIPs.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
