Opera League Announces An Introduction to THE MIKADO

Pikes Peak Opera League announced its 2016-2017 Season last fall, complete with music programs presented at monthly meetings throughout the year and special fundraising events. Formed originally as the Colorado Opera Festival Guild in 1979, Pikes Peak Opera League is now celebrating its 38th year.

The first major 2017 event sponsored by Pikes Peak Opera League is "An Introduction to The Mikado" which will be held on Wednesday evening, February 15, 2017 starting at 5:30 pm at the home of Dr. Susan Rae Jensen and Mr. Tom A. Trainer. The event includes food, wine as well as a dessert buffet. Cost is $40 per person.

The evening will feature a presentation about Gilbert and Sullivan and their influence on the operetta, The Mikado, which is rarely performed in southern Colorado, The talk will be given by Dr. Dennis Jackson, former Chairman of the Opera Department at CU Boulder and Martile Rowland, Opera Theatre's Founder and Artistic Director. Gilbert and Sullivan songs will be presented by Opera Theatre ensemble singers.

This special program will provide you with enough background information and spirited music to help you feel like an informed opera goer when you attend the live performance of The Mikado presented by Opera Theatre of the Rockies on Saturday evening, May 13 at 7:30 pm or on Sunday afternoon, May 14 at 3:00 pmat the Kathryn Morhman Theatre, Armstrong Hall at Colorado College, NE corner of Cache La Poudre Street and Cascade Avenue. The Pikes Peak Opera League, with a membership of approximately 150, supports opera in southern Colorado through its liaison with Opera Theatre of the Rockies and Opera Theatre Goes to School. Its breadth of support also includes scholarships in the form of Career Grants given to talented young Colorado singers every spring and sponsorship of the popular Young Voice Competition for area high school vocal arts students, now in its fifth year.
