Michael Learned to Lead Delaware Theatre Company's THE OUTGOING TIDE

The Delaware Theatre Company announced today that

Michael Learned, of the "The Waltons," will be starring in DTC's October production of The Outgoing Tide. A drama by Barrymore Award-winning playwright Bruce Graham, The Outgoing Tide runs at the Delaware Theatre Company Wednesday, October 10 through Sunday, October 28, 2012 and marks the first show of DTC's 2012-2013 season. Directed by Executive Director Bud Martin, the production will then move to 59E59 Theaters in New York for six weeks: November 8 through December 16, following its three week run in Wilmington, Delaware.

Playing the role of Peg in this three-actor play, Michael boasts an extensivebackground including Broadway, television and feature film credits. Michael is best known for her role as Olivia Walton in the legendary TV series, "The Waltons," for which she received three Emmy awards.   Additionally, she received an Emmy for her role as Mary Benjamin in her own series "Nurse." She is also a People's Choice Award winner and four-time Golden Globe nominee. Broadway credits include: Gore Vidal's The Best Man, The SistersRosenweig and The Three Sisters.   Starring in the world premieres of Arthur Miller's The Ride Down Mt. Morgan, Neil Simon's Actors and Actresses, Looking for Normal and The Good Doctor, Michael has also performed in the national tours of On Golden Pond, Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, Love Letters, and Driving Miss Daisy. Her feature films include Life During Wartime, Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, and Power directed by Sidney Lumet. Michael can also be seen on the small screen in such shows as "The Young and the Restless", "Scrubs", "Law and Order: SVU", "Cold Case", "General Hospital", "Gunsmoke", "St. Elsewhere", and "Murder She Wrote."  

Of the play, Michael shared:  "When I read the play the first time, I found myself laughing out loud . . . and at the end I wept. Not because it was so sad, but because it was so right, so human, so perfect. It is the story of a flawed family dealing with life and death choices and I can't wait for rehearsals to begin. I am in love with this play and its richly human characters."   

Director Bud Martin echoed this enthusiasm, saying: "We are thrilled that Michael has agreed to do this show.  We all know her as a wonderful TV actress but most people do not know the extent of her talent as a stage actress.  Her willingness to come to Wilmington is a testament to just how important this play is and offers a rare and marvelous opportunity for our audiences to see her live on stage." 

The Outgoing Tide offers surprising humor as it thoughtfully explores the ebb and flow of a family dynamic.  In a summer cottage on Chesapeake Bay, Gunner has hatched an unorthodox plan to secure his family's future but meets with resistance from his wife and grown son. According to the Chicago Sun Times, this drama by Philadelphia's most acclaimed playwright Bruce Graham "hums with dark humor and profound emotion." Winner of the Joseph Jefferson Award for Chicago's Best New Play of 2011 following its first premiere at the Northlight Theatre in Chicago, Theatre Mania calls the show "thought provoking and moving."
