As I walk along the busy campus sidewalks and city streets, I can't help notIce The changes in style. Here and there I see clothing choices that reflect a not-so-distant past. Bold blue, purple and green t shirts. Neon green and yellow sunglasses, big hair and bright eye shadow. Legwarmers and boots. Long shirts, bandanas, polka dots and skateboarding. It's almost as if I'm trapped in a time warp. The 80's are back!

I began to notice 80's culture making its comeback in 2006, when I entered my first year of college. Now, as a senior, I see that the craze has come full circle. Girls and guys alike have been bitten by the 80's bug. They incorporate it into every aspect of their lives. I have also discovered an 80's radio station that plays the "big hits" all day. In fact, the music of the 80's may be the biggest culture craze sweeping our nation today. Every generation has its own revival, of sorts. I believe the 80's belongs to mine.

When Playhouse South first announced it would tackle an 80's style musical, I was less than enthused. I was skeptical about supporting a show I had never heard of; one which had never attained any sort of public following or acclaim. Then I read the script. I was blown away by a show that, rather than leaning on a powerful storyline, celebrates an epic era of American music. I was ashamed I had ever doubted it.

November 6th, Playhouse South will unveil its production of Neil Gooding's Back to the 80's. It tells the story of Corey Palmer, a "child of the 80's" who recounts his senior year experience in 1989. The show combines a stunning collection of popular 80's music with throw-back comedy. Considering the recent renewal of 80's culture and the deaths of 80's legends like Michael Jackson and Patrick Swayze, Back to the 80's was a perfect choice for PHS's season.

Jim Brown, President of the Board at Playhouse South, helms the project. He is accompanied by Music Director Charles Penird, Assistant Director Robert Breving, Stage Manger Rebecca Norgaard, and Choreographer Jill Proudfoot. I have seen this production in rehearsal and I must say it is shaping up to be the surprise smash of the season. The cast is spectacular and the enthusiasm is incredibly refreshing. I invite you to join Playhouse South as it honors the Glory Days of popular music in this fantastic new production. For details, visit www.playhousesouth.org or call 888-262-3792. See you there!
