Westport Arts Center Presents Meet the Filmmaker Pilot Program with Yellow Submarine

Westport Arts Center will present a pilot program, "Meet the Filmmaker," featuring the 1968 animated film "The Yellow Submarine," with music by The Beatles, on Friday, October 1, at 7 p.m. The movie was produced by Al Brodax of Weston, who will introduce the award-winning work and talk about its production with the audience and moderator Sumner Jules Glimcher, emeritus professor of New York University. Suggested donated is $10.

"Building upon the strength of our Westport Youth Film Festival, the Westport Arts Center plans to expand its film programming for audiences of all ages," said Nancy Heller, Westport Arts Center executive director. "We are thrilled that Mr. Glimcher has offered to bring his ‘Meet the Filmmaker' program to the Westport Arts Center. There is tremendous interest in film among residents and Mr. Glimcher selected ‘The Yellow Submarine' as the pilot film so that we could highlight talent that exists within our own community."

"The Yellow Submarine" producer Al Brodax was the head of the motion picture/television department of King Features Syndicate when he originated the idea of a full-length animated film based on The Beatles' song, "Yellow Submarine," and brought the concept to The Beatles. After "Yellow Submarine," Brodax went on to produce, write and direct several Emmy Award-winning television series including ABC's "Make a Wish," and "Animals, Animals, Animals" starring Hal Linden. In the 1980s Brodax served as consultant to several firms including Marvel Comics, Computer Graphics Laboratories and the New York Institute of Technology. In 2004, Brodax released a book entitled "Up Periscope Yellow: The Making of the Yellow Submarine." He is currently writing an adventure/comedy novel entitled "Jokka" and plans to produce a live action movie in the U.K. next year called "Fish Story."

"The Yellow Submarine" follows The Beatles as they agree to accompany Captain Fred in his Yellow Submarine and go to Pepperland to free it from the music hating Blue Meanies. The film won awards from the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle. Among the songs in the movie are "All You Need Is Love," "All Together Now," and the title tune.

"Meet the Filmmaker" is created, produced and moderated by Sumner Jules Glimcher, emeritus professor at NYU where until his retirement he was the director of the Department of Film, Video and Broadcasting. He first moved to Westport in 1960 and has long been involved in town activities, including developing programs for WAC in the 1980s. He also served on the board of "Friends of Music," was a member of the Theater Artists Workshop and is still active in the Unitarian Church and the Westport Y's Men.

Glimcher spent one-third of his career in academe and the rest as a producer of documentary films and as a consultant. In addition to his last post at NYU, he taught at Harvard University, his alma mater, as well as Columbia University's Graduate School of the Arts. His films have received more than three dozen major national and international awards. He wrote on the first text books on filmmaking, "Movie Making: A Guide to Film Production," which was a best seller and became required reading at many leading universities, including NYU long before he taught there.
