HCD's annual presentation of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker premiered in December of 2011. It has become a beloved holiday tradition in the Greater Hartford community, and features an ever-growing cast of HCD's most talented preprofessional ballet dancers. Set to Peter IIyitch Tchaikovsky's glorious score, The Nutcracker is an exquisitely stunning production that makes for a family-friendly holiday experience. This year, the first act continues to encompass the charm of former Artistic Director Samantha Dunster's vision. The second act showcases brand new choreography set by current Artistic Director Susannah Marchese. This season, HCD's production will feature a tree that grows to tremendous heights, falling snow, the ultimate battle between Clara's beloved Nutcracker and his nemesis the Rat King, and the return of beloved characters like Mother Ginger.
"The Nutcracker is a time-honored tradition in every young dancer's life," Marchese says about the ballet. "This year, I am taking the second act back to the Land Of The Sweets. Spanish Chocolate, Arabian Coffee, Chinese Tea, Marzipan, Candy Canes, and of course the Sugar Plum Fairy will all be there to welcome Clara to the Land Of The Sweets. Tchaikovsky's world-renowned score, all-new second act choreography, radiant costumes, stunning sets and lighting, paired with our immensely talented dancers makes for a magical experience for young and old alike."
