The Hartt School Announces 2010-2011 Instrumental Performance Season

The Hartt School kicks off its Hartt Symphony Orchestra season with a concert of orchestral masterpieces conducted by Edward Cumming on Friday, October 1, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Cumming, who serves as Hartt's Interim Director of Orchestral Activities for the 2010-2011 academic year, is the longtime music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. The concert, followed by a reception celebrating Maestro Cumming's season with Hartt, includes Dukas's Sorcerer's Apprentice, Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Ravel's La Valse, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

In its first concert of the 2010-2011 season, the Hartt Wind Ensemble features two new works by emerging composers Kevin Puts and Roshanne Etezady. In addition, the performance features renownEd Hartt cello professor Mihai Tetel playing the Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra by Jaques Ibert. Concluding the concert is the 20th century masterpiece of Karel Husa, Music for Prague 1968. The concert takes place on Friday, October 8, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The first concert of the 2010-2011 Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series is An Evening with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center on Thursday, October 14, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Spend an evening with the country's premier chamber music organization, known to millions from its many appearance on PBS. The Hartt concert roster of artists includes violinists Ani and Ida Kavafian, cellist Fred Sherry, violist Paul Neubauer, and clarinetist David Shifrin. Also performing as part of the Richard P. Garmany Series are the Bang on a Can All-Stars, The Brentano String Quartet, and the New York Woodwind Quintet. This Series has been made possible by a grant from the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. A special pre-concert dinner precedes each performance and begins at 6:00 PM in the University's 1877 Club, and a post concert reception to meet the artists follows each performance. The Hartt School presents the Hartt Symphony Band on Friday, October 15, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Under the direction of Matthew Aubin, The Hartt Symphony Band's first concert of the 2010-2011 season, entitled "Celebrating the Americas," features music of the Americas, including the Zacatecas-Mexican March by the Mexican composer Genaro Codina and Suite of Old American Dances by Robert Russell Bennett. La Fiesta Mexicana by 100-year old composer H. Owen Reed rounds out the program. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

The Hartt School presents Performance 20/20 on Saturday, October 16, at 2:00 PM, and Sunday, October 17, at 2:00PM and 7:30 PM, in Berkman RecitAl Hall, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Join some of Hartt's most talented instrumentalists in their first concerts of chamber music this school year. Each concert features a different repertoire. Saturday, 2:00 PM: North, Central, South, featuring the Piazzolla Four Seasons with faculty member Michael Schiano, accordion. Sunday, 2:00 PM: The Russians are Coming, featuring the Stravinsky Octet and the Shostakovich Piano Quintet. Sunday, 5:00 PM: Mediterranean Summer Nights, featuring the Francaix Octet and Barber's Summer Music. Admission is free. Seating is limited.

The Hartt Symphony Orchestra performs on Friday, November 5, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This concert features the world premiere of the Piano Concerto by acclaimed composer David Macbride, a member of the Hartt faculty, featuring soloist Erberk Eryilmaz. Maestro Cumming conducts. The program also includes Sibelius's Finlandia and Strauss's Ein Heldenleben. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

The Hartt School presents Hartt Chamber Winds on Friday, November 12, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This concert features members of the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band performing masterworks for chamber winds. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

Lions Gate Trio, The Hartt School's trio-in-residence, performs on Saturday, November 13, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The trio continues its survey of the complete chamber music of Brahms. Lions Gate Trio includes violinist Katie Lansdale, pianist Florence Millet, and cellist Marcy Rosen. The Hartt School Collegium Musicum in Concert presents an exciting program of 17th and 18th century music on Wednesday, December 1, at 7:30 PM, in Berkman RecitAl Hall, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Admission is free. Seating is limited.

The Composers Ensemble presents new music by Hartt student composers and others on Saturday, December 4, at 7:30 PM, in Bliss Music Room, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Admission is free.

For the second concert in the 2010-2011 Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, Hartt is thrilled to present the Bang on a Can All-Stars on Thursday, December 9, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Bang on a Can All-Stars is the internationally celebrated new-music group whose every concert is a unique event. The six-person ensemble, which includes Hartt's dynamic professor of bass Robert Black, performs to cheering audiences all over the world. This Series has been made possible by a grant from the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band performs a concert on Friday, December 10, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater. This concert features Hartt violin professor Anton Miller in a new work by Joel Puckett for solo violin and wind ensemble. In addition, the Wind Ensemble premiers a new work by the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon. Under the direction of Matthew Aubin, the Hartt Symphony Band performs works by two 20th Century masters. In celebration of the composer's 100th Anniversary, Commando March by Samuel Barber opens the program. Other works include a 2007 transcription of Aaron Copland's "Promise of Living" from The Tender Land. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

An Evening of Concerto Winners features some of the finest classical instrumental soloists at The Hartt School. This concert showcases four concerto competition winners from the 2010-2011 season, accompanied by the Hartt Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. The third concert in the 2010-2011 Richard P. Hartt's annual Collage Concert, which is free and open to the public, features two acts filled with continuous music, dance, and theatre. The Hartt Wind Ensemble performs on Friday, March 11, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This concert features three new works that all incorporate the use of electronics in addition to the acoustic sounds of the Wind Ensemble. Featured in the program is the world premiere of a work by Hartt composition faculty member Ken Steen. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

The Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series for 2010-2011 concludes with a performance by the New York Woodwind Quintet on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Celebrating its 60th year, the New York Woodwind Quintet is one of chamber music's most honored and venerable ensembles. Each of the Quintet's members is an established artist in his or her own right and the group's bassoonist, Marc Goldberg, is a long-time member of the Hartt faculty. The final Wind Ensemble concert of the 2010-2011 season features Hartt's dynamic Double Bass Professor Robert Black in a concerto for double bass and wind ensemble. The Hartt Symphony Band presents Percussion Galore on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The concert features works by Ticheli, Maggio, Grainger, Sousa, Gillingham, and Persichetti. Guest conductors include Hartt's Glen Adist and Adam Williamson. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

The Hartt Symphony Orchestra and Choruses join the New Haven Chorale and the Connecticut Children's Chorus for a gala concert of awe-inspiring musical masterpieces and readings that vividly portray man's spiritual journey entitled Journey of the Soul on Friday, April 28, at 7:30 PM, in Woolsey Hall, Yale University, New Haven. The concert opens with Edward Bolkovac leading Brahms' beloved Schicksalslied, continues with Stravinsky's energetic Symphony of Psalms under the baton of Maestro Edward Cumming, and concludes with Urlicht and the Finale of Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 Resurrection led by Maestro Bolkovac. A second performance, on May 1 in Hartford, may be scheduled and will be announced at a later date. Admission details also will be announced at that time.

The Faculty of The Hartt School present a series of recitals this academic year, at various performance venues at the University of Hartford. Hartt's musicians, many of whom perform throughout the world, also provide area audiences the opportunity to sample their musical talents right here in West Hartford. All concerts of The 2010-2011 Faculty Recital Series take place in Berkman RecitAl Hall. Recitals are by Katie Lansdale, violin, and Maggie Francis, piano, on September 12, at 5:00 PM; Carrie Koffman, saxophone, on September 19, at 2:00 PM; Chriss Ladd, guitar, on October 24, at 2:00 PM; Steve Larson, viola, and friends, on October 31, at 2:00 PM; Rita Porfiris, viola, and Maggie Francis, piano, November 14, at 2:00 PM; Luiz de Moura Castro, piano, February 27, at 2:00 PM; Robert Black, double bass and Maggie Francis, piano, March 27, at 2:00 PM; and an array of faculty performing the chamber arrangement of Mahler's Symphony No. 4, on May 8, at 2:00 PM.
