The Hartt School, the comprehensive performing arts school of the University of Hartford, today announced that the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has renewed its support for School's Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series through 2014.  The Fund, which has been the principal underwriter of the Series since its inception, will provide Hartt with $53,000 for each of the next two seasons.

The 2012-2013 Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series features Tempesta di Mare (Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra) on October 18, 2012; eighth blackbird on November 15, 2012; Imani Winds on February 21, 2013; and MiróQuartet with special guest artist Colin Currie, percussion, on April 4, 2013.

David Polk, Advisor to the Garmany Fund at The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, said, "We are very appreciative of the way in which Dean Flagg and Series Curator Steve Metcalf have developed and grown this chamber music series.  Mr. Garmany would be very pleased with how this series has helped transform people's perception of what chamber music is through its presentation of some of the most dynamic and innovative artists of our time.  By mixing new, cutting-edge music with traditional repertoire, and with artists that speak informally to the audience from the stage and mingle with patrons at post-concert receptions, the Series not only has established itself as a premiere chamber music experience in the region, but also has helped change the face of chamber music in our community.  We have been pleased to see more and more students, as well as members of the Greater-Hartford community, in attendance to enjoy these intimate and exciting concerts.  We hope the rest of our community is as impressed with the evolution and quality of the programming as we are."

Before his death in 2008, Mr. Garmany, a former executive at Aetna, created a donor-advised fund at the Hartford Foundation through his will.  Since then, more than 60 grants totaling almost $1.3 million have been awarded to support dozens of regional nonprofits, including Hartford Hospital, Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network, Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Connecticut River Watershed Council, Hartford Stage, The Friends of Elizabeth Park, Simsbury Light Opera Company, and West Hartford Community Theater.

"One of the guiding ideas behind these concerts has been to give our students, and our community, a taste of where classical chamber music is headed in our time.  In view of the large and enthusiastic crowds we've drawn in our first three seasons, it's clearly headed in a good direction," noted Steve Metcalf, Director of Instrumental Studies for The Hartt School and Curator of the Series.

Dr. Aaron Flagg, Dean of The Hartt School, added, "This Series represents the level of quality and excellence – of our students, alumni, faculty, and guest artists – that exists throughout The Hartt School.  We are grateful to the Foundation for continuing to support Hartt's efforts to bring artists of the highest caliber to the University of Hartford, where they contribute to the artistic growth of our own students and to the cultural life of the entire community."

All performances are held on Thursday evenings and begin at 7:30 PM.  Performances are held in Hartt's Millard Auditorium or in Lincoln Theater, both on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus.  Individual concert tickets are $35 and Series subscriptions are $120, with discounts on individual tickets and subscriptions for seniors, educators, University of Hartford alumni, students, and groups.
