Long Wharf Theatre has named Betty Monz as its new director of development, starting her job in early October.

"I am so thrilled to join Long Wharf Theatre and return to New Haven's arts community with a fresh perspective. I believe in the power of the arts to transform a community. I know Long Wharf to be vital to New Haven's vibrant art scene and integral to the entire community. I look forward to being part of a dynamic team, with an engaged board and the tremendous leadership of Gordon and Josh that builds on a half a century of a nationally renowned legacy and is well poised to get ever more exciting," Monz said.

Monz succeeds Eileen Wiseman, who left the theatre in June to become the Director of Strategic Initiatives at The Tow Foundation. "Gordon Edelstein and I are simply delighted that Betty will be joining our team. She has a great combination of fundraising savvy, knowledge of the regional arts sector, and leadership experience which will enable her to succeed in her role here," said Managing Director Joshua Borenstein.

Monz has most recently served as a Major Gifts Officer and Senior Development Officer at Choate Rosemary Hall and at The Hopkins School respectively. For these independent schools, she successfully raised major contributions for annual fund, capital, and endowment campaigns. At Hopkins, she worked with donors who contributed $100,000 and up, as well as with reunion classes on their planning and fundraising.

Monz had previously served as the Executive Director of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven from 2000 to 2006. Some of her accomplishments at the Arts Council included securing a $150,000 annual state appropriation, doubled patron-level contributions to the Arts Council, and was a co-founder of the Connecticut Arts Alliance.

Her prior experience in the arts includes serving as the Director of the Regional Cultural Plan, an initiative which was aimed at strengthening Greater New Haven's cultural assets. She was also the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Creative Arts Workshop.

Prior to her career in the arts, Betty worked with General Analysis Corporation for 12 years, moving up through the ranks and ultimately serving as Vice-President for Marketing. Betty earned a BA in Anthropology from Franklin and Marshall College, and MS in Food Science and Nutrition from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
