Arts & Ideas Teams Up with Gateway Community College for Fellowship Program

The International Festival of Arts & Ideas in partnership with Gateway Community College announce that the Festival's annual Fellowship Program, offered to New Haven high school sophomores and juniors, is now an accredited course at Gateway.

The Festival's Fellowship Program, which aspires to develop the next generation of arts practitioners and audiences, is a semester-long intensive designed to develop each
fellow's skills in communication and critical thinking, through a program of weekly seminars and immersion in the Festival's programming. Fellows challenge and learn from each other, develop relationships with Festival staff and board members, and cultivate skills that can be used in future school and work environments. Participation can be the beginning of a longer-term engagement with the Festival, including future internship and employment opportunities.

The 13 students who comprise the 2017 class of Festival Fellows convened for the first time on Wednesday, January 18, and will continue to meet for weekly 3-hour seminars in which upcoming Festival Performance programs in music, theater, and dance are core teaching tools. Each seminar will engage students using a combination of classroom instruction, coaching, and assignments designed to develop skills in various forms of communication (including critical and creative writing, interviews, video production, and performance).

The program will culminate in June when the Fellows spend two weeks fully immersed in Festival 22's programs: attending performances, writing responses, interviewing artists and Festival staff, and volunteering at Festival events. At the completion of the Fellowship, participants will earn four credits at Gateway Community College.

"The Fellows have enriched the experience of each season of the Festival since the program was introduced eight years ago," says Mary Lou Aleskie, the Festival's Executive Director. "We are delighted that now, in addition to the remarkable firsthand access to some of the world's greatest artists and thinkers, our Fellows will also earn four college credits before they even graduate high school."

The International Festival of Arts & Ideas is a year-round organization that culminates with an annual celebration of performing arts, lectures, and conversations each June in New Haven, CT. The 2017 Festival will take place June 10-24. The Festival convenes leading artists, thought leaders, and innovators from around the world for fifteen days of dynamic public programs to engage, entertain, and inspire a diversity of communities. More than 80% of Festival programs are free to the public, including events that feature some of the most influential jazz, classical, dance, and theater artists of our time. The Festival takes place in venues and open spaces in downtown New Haven, in the heart of the northeast corridor, two and a half hours south of Boston and ninety minutes north of New York City.

The Festival's programs have an impact throughout the year and include additional performances, educational opportunities, and the annual Visionary Leadership Award. The Festival was established in 1996, by Anne Calabresi, Jean M. Handley, and Roslyn Meyer. They envisioned an annual celebration in New Haven-a city steeped in a rich array of cultural and educational traditions-distinguished from other arts festivals by its fusion of the arts with events centered on sharing ideas.

The Festival is presented with major support from the Connecticut Office of the Arts, Yale University, Key Bank, Comcast/NBC Connecticut, The City of New Haven, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
