Playhouse on the Square and the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County will host dog auditions and pet adoptions at Playhouse on the Square on Saturday, June 23 from 11am to 2pm. The theatre company will cast dogs for two upcoming productions, Legally Blonde and Annie, while connecting residents of the Humane Society with families that can provide a forever home. “We had such an adventure last year when we cast Hester (a former Humane Society resident) in Annie and our goal was to get her adopted,” said Dave Landis, Playhouse’s Associate Director. Hester was quickly adopted after a family saw her in the show. “We’re combining auditions with an adoption day in honor of Hester,” said Landis.

Multiple Chihuahuas are needed to fill the role of “Bruiser” in Legally Blonde. Playhouse is also casting additional dogs of no particular breed, but the dogs must be small enough to be carried onstage.  Dogs with tan coats are needed to fill the role of “Sandy” in the remount ofAnnie.  The dogs will need to be available to attend rehearsals. Schedules will be distributed at auditions. The families of the selected dogs will be compensated with a free season subscription to Playhouse on the Square.

The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County will be present during auditions with the Pet Waggin’ Mobile Adoption Unit. Hollywood Feed will be there with samples and coupons and snacks will be available for purchase from the Memphis Dawgs hot dog cart to round out the dog-centric day. For more information or to RSVP for auditions, please call Lisa Lynch at 901-725-0776 or emaillisa@playhouseonthesquare.org.
