JOB TITLE: Technical Director

DEPARTMENT: Production

REPORTS TO: Production Manager

DIRECT REPORTS: Staff Carpenters, Carpentry Apprentice, Scenic Artist, interns, and overhire as necessary

WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Artistic Staff (including Artistic Apprentice), Production Staff, Prop Director, Costume Shop Manager, Marketing Staff, Theatre Management Staff, Facilities Staff

POSITION LEVEL: Supervisor

PT/FT STATUS: Full-Time, Exempt



JOB PURPOSE:

? To collaborate with the Production Manager on the planning and oversight of all aspects of the day to day operation of the scene shop and execution of all scenery for productions and presentations of Studio Theatre and other programming by Studio Theatre or on Studio’s premises, as assigned

? To maintain, install and operate scenic theatrical equipment and control consoles in all venues at Studio Theatre for all performances and events as assigned



KEY RESULT AREAS:

? Collaborate with designers and production departments to realize each production’s set design within budget

? Manage scenic department budgets and schedules for productions of Studio Theatre and other programming.

? Support the programming and production needs of other departments of Studio Theatre.

? Communicate with all departments to provide information regarding aspects of production plans.

? Create schedules that will cost-effectively provide for the execution of performance and presentation at

the highest artistic standards, by supervising and communicating with Staff, Apprentices, Interns, and over-hire crews.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

? Manage all aspects of the planning, build, load-in, tech and maintenance of scenery and technical needs for all productions and events at Studio Theatre.

? Create time and material estimates, technical drawings, schedules, and any other documentation related to productions.

? Hire and supervise crews, coordinate schedules and work calls for performances, maintenance, and other events at Studio Theatre.

? Foster communication between all production areas including: Artistic Staff, Stage Management, Props, and Costumes.

? Coordinate schedules for build and load-in with related production departments

? Oversee purchasing and/or acquisition of production related materials as necessary.

? Attend all production meetings, and other meetings, with Director and Designers as assigned by

Production Manager.

? Maintain all departmental budgets for projects as they develop, in conjunction with the Production

Management Team.

? Supervise builds, load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strikes.

? Maintain stock for use in rehearsal or productions. This includes maintaining an inventory of holdings and

arranging the storage areas.

? Read all rehearsal and performance reports and follow up with timely repairs and supplies as needed.

? Coordinate with visiting designers regarding the scope and implementation of their technical needs

? Work with artists, designers, Studio staff, overhire crews, run crews, and stage managers to present the

highest quality shows and events

? Participate in achieving the artistic goals, insuring quality and consistency, and maintaining the highest

production values for Studio Theatre.

? Maintain inventories and equipment at scene shop and all theatres.

? Assist Production Manager in developing production calendar and budgets

? Assist the Production Manager in establishing and maintaining departmental standards and procedures.

? Consult and collaborate on all technical aspects related to capital improvements.

? Manage and provide professional development for apprentices.

? Assist Production Management team to develop talented and dedicated technicians, run crew, and other

personnel as required. Provide timely feedback to these staff to insure a great technical team.

? Other duties as assigned



NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

? Maintain currency with industry standards, including safety regulations and requirements.



REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

? BA or MFA in technical theater preferred.

? High School diploma and/or 5 years appropriate professional theatre experience in technical direction or

related field

? Advance knowledge of rigging techniques and practices with an emphasis on safety.

? Ability to manage expenditures and budgets.

? Ability to create schedules and meet deadlines.

? Excellent oral and writing skills.

? Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

? Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Powerpoint.

? Advanced knowledge of Autocad and Vectorworks.

? Ability to read, create, manipulate, and interpret drawings and other technical materials.

? Possess a valid driver’s License.
