Broadway at Birdland Presents

The Return of MONTGOMERY, MAYES & STRITCH

Starring Sharon Montgomery, Sally Mayes & Billy Stritch

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to present the long-awaited return of MONTGOMERY, MAYES & STRITCH, the vocal trio starring Sharon Montgomery, Sally Mayes and Billy Stritch. This one-night-only celebration and concert, produced by Matt Berman, will take place on Monday, September 23 at 7pm. Thirty-two years ago, three crazy kids from the University of Houston (Sharon Montgomery, Sally Mayes and Billy Stritch) formed a unique and hilarious jazz vocal trio. Unable to mutually agree on a name for their new venture, they dubbed themselves "Montgomery, Mayes & Stritch," and soon took Texas nightclubs and theaters by storm. Their success led to smash engagements in Newport, RI and on the New York cabaret scene. Since that charmed time, they've each gone on to have very successful solo careers, but for one night only, they'll recreate their special brand of harmony and humor!

Along with our namesake, Charlie Parker, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966) is considered to be one of the creators of the style of modern jazz known as bebop. Despite his tragically short life, including bouts of mental illness, alcoholism and a self-imposed period of exile in Paris, Powell helped to define modern jazz piano technique while his brutal life story went on to inspire the Oscar winning film "'Round Midnight." This all-star birthday tribute will feature influential bebop compositions that Powell left behind including "Bouncin' with Bud," "Dance of the Infidels," "Budo," "Tempus Fugit," and "Un Poco Loco."

Named for alto saxophonist and jazz pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker who dubbed it "The Jazz Corner of the World," Birdland opened on December 15th 1949. For 60 years it has been home to jazz legends, from Parker, John Coltrane Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Diana Krall and everyone in between. The original 52nd street location was a cultural barometer and meeting place, inspiring the songs "Birdland" and "Lullabye of Birdland," and serving as a regular haunt for celebrities and cultural figures. The modern incarnation is a state of the art nightclub featuring award winning Southern and Cajun cuisine, first rate sound and lighting and a who's who of contemporary musical artists, 7 nights a week.

The club is located at 315 West 44th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues), New York, NY 10036. Birdland serves American Fare with a Cajun Flair nightly from 5PM until Midnight and until 1AM on Friday and Saturdays. Parking is available across the street at 332 West 44th Street.
