Broadway at the Cabaret - Top 5 Cabaret Picks for August 18-24, 2014

Broadway's 40 theatres aren't the only places to catch performances from your favorite stars! Well after Broadway orchestra's begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven- o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you some cabaret highlights for this week as picked by our theatre editors, including: Ben Platt: I'm Here!, The Songs of Anderson & Petty, Ga Ga for Gershwin, Andrew Kober's Koberet and Rhonda Ross.

Ben Platt: I'm Here!

He had the "Magic" in him onscreen as Benji Applebaum in Universal's smash hit Pitch Perfect, and he's currently starring on Broadway as Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon. Now, to celebrate finally making the move to NYC, Ben Platt comes to 54 Below to sing some of his favorites and share tales of Mormons, his fellow aca-people, and of course, his family of singing Jews. Expect everything from soul, to Pop and R&B to musical theatre and some special guests!

The Songs of Anderson & Petty

Anderson & Petty, the transatlantic songwriting duo present selections from their new song-cycle Lostand also their recent album You Are Home - The Songs of Anderson & Petty, which features both Broadway and West End stars including Frances Ruffelle, Coleen Sexton, Cynthia Erivo, Gina Beck and Autumn Hurlbert. They have had concerts at The Duplex and The Triad in New York and in London at The Delfont Room at the Prince of Wales Theatre, The Union Theatre and the prestigious St. James Studio. Their songs have also been featured in concerts at the Bruno Walter Auditorium in New York and in London at Cafe de Paris, The Actors' Church and the Garrick Theatre. Ga Ga for Gershwin

Dorothy Stone has taught and performed in opera, operetta, musical theatre and recitals throughout the United States, Europe and South America. In demand as both active performer and master teacher, she combines her unique and holistic style of teaching with a broad knowledge of vocal repertoire, encompassing a large variety of musical styles. She has traveled extensively to coach singers throughout the United States, France, Switzerland, Canada, England, Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia, Germany, Greece, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. Voted Toronto's "Best Male Vocalist" in the Now Magazine's Reader's Poll, Ori Dagan was also named "Canada's Next Top Crooner" by CBC Radio 1. He was initially inspired to sing by Ella Fitzgerald's genius scat solos and spent nearly a decade studying jazz formally before releasing his debut album, "S'Cat Got My Tongue," which garnered critical acclaim for the singer's sense of musical adventure. JazzTimes called him "a budding Kurt Elling" and The Los Angeles Jazz Scene proclaimed that the album is "a major step forward for Ori Dagan, who in a few years will likely be very well known in the jazz world." On Dagan's new release, "Less Than Three (<3)" the vocalist explores new territory, including reimagined pop songs, standards, originals, with selections in his native tongue of Hebrew stirred into the mix.

Andrew Kober's Koberet

Andrew Kober, Broadway's most beloved occasionally-employed actor (Les Miserables, Hair), muses on coming out, going in, gaining weight and getting thin. Previously seen at Joe's Pub, (le) Poisson Rouge, NYMF, and the Large Auditorium at Shaker Heights High School, Koberet returns to the New York stage for one night only (...for now...). Koberet 2014 may be even more exciting than the original phenomenon that took the Midwest by storm 12 years ago. It is the story of the life of Andrew Kober (thus far) set to original music by some of NYC's hottest young composers, as well as covers of classics by the likes of Billy Joel and Otis Redding. This latest incarnation will include many of the embarrassing and heart-warming tales from Andrew's childhood that audiences have come to know and love, as well as brand new material and musical moments. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll hear a story about a sex club in Paris.

Rhonda Ross

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that after captivating audiences at Madison Square Gardenand The Montreal Jazz Festival, singer-songwriter Rhonda Ross, along with her slamming jazz band (Terry Burrus on piano, Dominick Maybank on bass, Kevin Harrington on drums, Terelle Tipton, Keesha Gumbs, & Sheniqua Trotman on background vocals, Duane Eubanks on trumpet, and Darrly Yokely on sax) will appear on the historic stage. Through Rhonda's individual and creative expression, the legendary Ross sound continues to live on and expand. Last year, she headlined President Obama's 2nd Inaugural Ball, and later performed to rave reviews at The Hollywood Bowl. This year has included performances at The Montreal International Jazz Festival, Wolf Trap, and The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
