Telemundo Announces FIFA Presidential Election Coverage

Telemundo will cover the election of the next president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in a joint effort between Noticias Telemundo and NBC Deportes beginning Thursday, February 25, the day before the world's governing soccer organization convenes for its 2016 Extraordinary Congress. Legendary sportscaster Andrés Cantor will be in Zurich, Switzerland, to keep viewers informed about this developing story.

Starting Thursday, February 25, Noticias Telemundo and NBC Deportes will feature special reports on the FIFA Congress on the morning show "Un Nuevo Día" (7AM/6C), continuing throughout the evening on "Noticiero Telemundo" (6:30PM/5:30C) and NBCDeportes.com digital platforms.

The coverage will be even more extensive the following day, Friday the 26th, when FIFA will elect its new president. An hourly updates from Zurich on "Un Nuevo Día," Also reporter Neida Sandoval, Andrés Cantor and veteran sports commentator Sammy Sadovnik will be providing info on a Noticias Telemundo special report. It will in the afternoon on "Al Rojo Vivo" with news from the FIFA Congress and the announcement of the organization's new president. Noticiero Telemundo in the evening will inform from Europe as well.

Viewers will be able to listen to the candidates' speeches, observe the voting process and access breaking information live and without interruptions on NBC Deportes.com and the NBC Deportes EN VIVO EXTRA mobile app via live streaming beginning Friday, February 26 at 6:30AM/5:30C/3:30P.

On Saturday, February 27, a special report on the sports program "Titulares Telemundo" will follow up with a detailed recap of the previous day's events.

All of the information generated as part of this extensive coverage will also be available on Noticias Telemundo and NBCDeportes.com digital platforms.

The candidates for the FIFA presidency include Ali Bin Hussein, Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Jerome Champagne, Gianni Infantino and Tokyo Sexwale. The winner will be decided by FIFA's 209 affiliated soccer associations, federations and confederations. A two-thirds majority is needed to win the vote in the first round; if no single candidate achieves this total, the process will proceed to a second round in which 50% will be enough to determine the winner.

Of FIFA's 209 affiliated associations and confederations, 54 (26%) are African, 53 (25%) are part of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), 46 (22%) are in Asia, 35 (17%) represent Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf), 11 (5%) are in Oceania, and 10 (5%) are part of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).
